The official collaboration between LEGO and the Super Mario Bros. franchise has now been revealed and it’s an electronic toy set that uses animated figures. Nintendo of America recently uploaded a video during the Mario Day celebrations that mentioned LEGO and Super Mario Bros., along with a clip of what appeared to be a LEGO Mario figure.

The exact nature of the collaboration was unclear in the original trailer, but the most likely answer was some kind of LEGO toy set involving characters from the Mushroom Kingdom. There was also speculation that a LEGO Super Mario Bros. game was in the works, as there have been a number of Lego games based on popular franchises in the past. The Switch’s 2020 library is still pretty bare, so the idea of a LEGO Super Mario Bros. game doesn’t seem too far fetched.

The official LEGO Twitter account has uploaded a new video that has revealed the details of the collaboration. There is a LEGO Super Mario Bros. toy set that is an electronic game with segments that are similar to the world map from games like Super Mario Bros. 3. According to the video, the toy set has figures with animated displays that react to parts of the scenery, such as Mario being burned by lava.

The electronic figures will require separate batteries to function and they have Bluetooth functionality. The figures can react to each other, which will be shown on the animated displays on their face and chest, such as when Mario jumps on a goomba. The player assembles the set themselves and there are non-electronic gimmicks, such as causing the piranha plant to fall into a pipe. The intention of the game seems to be to gather coins and reach the end of the map. The figures that appear in the trailer include Mario, Baby Bowser, Yoshi, Shy Guy, a goomba, a blooper, a piranha plant, and a koopa troopa.

The Mario Day celebrations included a lot of expensive figures, but this electronic LEGO Super Mario Bros. toy set is probably going to be a wallet buster. There are a lot of fans who have been waiting for years for an official LEGO/Nintendo crossover and this feels like it could be the first step to bigger things, as there have only been LEGO video games on Nintendo consoles in the past. Now that a LEGO Super Mario Bros. set is a real thing, could we possibly see toy sets based on Pokémon or The Legend of Zelda in the future? The day may come when fans can create their own LEGO Super Smash Bros. universe based on the official toys.
