So, how do you feel about VR gaming? Maybe you’re one of those decrepit older gamers who owned a Virtual Boy back in the day, tried it out, and immediately regretted every life decision you’ve ever made. That was probably enough to put you off of the whole concept for life. If you are one of those cynics, maybe this is enough to win you around: the super-sweet-sounding Vader Immortal has been announced for Oculus Quest.

Of course, everyone’s got their own opinions on the whole VR gaming thing. Some would consider it a fad, others a failure. Then there are those gamers who are a little more open-minded, totally welcoming new tech and experiences where appropriate.

Appropriateness is key. When the DS was first released, and touchscreen functionality was shoehorned into every darn game ever, that was a little too much. As anyone who’s played Resident Evil 7 in VR will tell you, though, utilizing the tech correctly can make for an immersive experience like none other.

With that in mind, what could be more immersive (and nerve-shredding) than a face-to-face encounter with one of the most iconic pop culture villains of all time? That’s the premise behind Vader Immortal, a promising adventure coming to the freshly-announced Oculus Quest system.

From the brief teaser trailer, it would seem that the protagonist takes the role of a former pilot, captured by the Dark Lord of the Sith and subjected to a training scheme of sorts. It’s tough to piece together the core premise from the little we’ve seen, but if we’re going to be put through our dark side-wielding paces by the master himself, this is going to be one tempting proposition.

Interestingly, Vader Immortal is going to be released in episodic form. There’s no word yet on how long it will run or where the narrative’s going to take us, but one thing’s for certain: Star Wars fans are going to want to keep an eye on this one in the coming months. There’s an important caveat here, though: Destructoid reports that this adventure –which takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope– will be, in Oculus’s own words, a “VR story series, not a game.”

Fresh, engaging experiences are exactly what Oculus Quest is going to need, when it launches in Spring next year. This standalone VR system is just what a lot of us have been waiting for before getting on that bandwagon, so let’s hope everything goes well here. The Star Wars franchise hasn’t always fared so well in the gaming industry, after all.
