After much back-and-forth, LG is reportedly going to start selling Apple products in its South Korean stores. This news comes after LG had previously decided to end talks regarding the sale of Apple’s devices in-store. It looks as if the company has changed its tune and is now revisiting the initiative.

Back in April of this year, LG made the decision to stop manufacturing phones. The company tried to sell its mobile division to other companies but wasn’t able to find a buyer. This led the tech giant to make the hard decision to completely cut off mobile phones from its lineup of products. LG Electronics had its fine moments in the industry, such as popularizing wide-angle lenses in mobile cameras. Unfortunately, the mobile phone efforts of LG had to come to an end, and in their place was a void left by the once successful venture.

In order to fill that void, LG set out to find an alternative to push in its 400+ LG Best Shops. The brand had its eye on Apple’s iPhone, but in 2018, LG along with Samsung signed an agreement with smaller stores to halt the sale of any competitors’ devices in their chain locations. This completely barred Apple products from being sold by LG. When these small companies and the government – who was behind the idea that large companies should not be a threat to small stores – got involved, the plans for selling Apple devices were put on hold. But now, according to ZDNet, LG has revisited the issue in light of the closing of its mobile phone division and was given the go-ahead to finally sell Apple’s line of products. Starting in August, LG Electronics will reportedly start selling iPhones and possibly even Apple Watches in-store for its many customers.

What’s Next For Samsung?

Understandably, Samsung is likely not fond of this new agreement because it turns LG Best Shops into iPhone retail locations. Samsung has been looking for market domination in South Korea against Apple for a while, and LG pushing Apple devices in large retail stores could mean even more competition from the California-based tech giant. LG on the other hand will likely see some of its missing smartphone revenue replaced. Of course, this only applies to brick-and-mortar LG stores in South Korea. LG likely will not start selling Apple products online or anywhere else. If not for the agreement being revisited, LG might have been looking at even greater financial losses, even with its full lineup of interesting products.

There isn’t much information on LG’s plans for the new store stock. Eventually, customers may see iPads and MacBooks being sold at these locations as well, but at the moment that’s more speculation than anything. It might just depend on how well the products do for LG. Another thing to note is just because LG is selling these devices now, doesn’t automatically mean they will do well. In any case, the South Korean market will be an interesting one to watch going forward.
