LG has partnered with Nvidia to bring the GeForce Now cloud gaming service to select webOS-powered TVs. The company’s OLED TVs are arguably some of the best money can buy at a reasonable price, and its latest OLED TV models support high frame rates with up to 120 fps and variable refresh rates. All of which makes them a good option for gaming.
Whether it’s Sony, Panasonic, or any other, many OLED TV manufacturers source their panels from LG and use their own software and tuning to complete the experience. Nvidia’s GeForce Now is already available on a number of other devices, include the company’s own Nvidia Shield streaming player, as well as the Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Android platforms. The service can also be accessed on an iPhone or an iPad via the Safari browser.
LG has confirmed that Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service is coming to some of its newer webOS TVs this week. This is notable as it’s the first time the cloud gaming service has become available directly on a smart TV. According to the press release, the app will be available to download from LG’s Content Store as a beta, but only “in 80 markets” and on “select 2021 LG 4K OLED, QNED Mini LED and NanoCell TV models.” The announcement also notes that, other than paring a compatible controller, no additional hardware is required.
A Timely Announcement
The timing of the announcement is interesting considering supply chain issues have resulted in a worldwide shortage of GPUs, and Nvidia has already said to expect supply chain constraints to continue throughout 2022. Therefore, providing consumers with a way to enjoy games on a screen they already have at home is a good alternative. As pointed out in LG’s announcement, GeForce Now uses Nvidia’s RTX-powered servers and users can expect “the most responsive gameplay and gorgeous, high-quality graphics.”
LG’s OLED TVs combined with GeForce Now seems like a match made in heaven. The OLED tech enables individually lit-pixels for high contrast ratios, inky blacks, and low 1ms responses times. Combined with Nvidia’s powerful RTX platform, and the result is likely to be a solid gaming experience. One point the announcement was not totally clear on is whether the use is restricted to just a controller, or whether a keyboard and mouse can also be connected to the LG TV and used instead. For any gamers that tend to prefer using a keyboard and mouse, they may have to wait until LG and Nvidia add support.
