Lightyear is an upcoming origin story for Buzz Lightyear; however, it’s also the closest that Pixar will ever get to a WALL-E sequel. Disney first announced Lightyear at its 2020 Investor Day, revealing the movie wouldn’t be a typical Toy Story film. Instead, Lightyear tells the story of the actual Space Ranger that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter elaborated on the idea, saying Lightyear was the “definitive origin story of the original Buzz Lightyear,” showing how the young test pilot became a legendary Space Ranger. Docter also announced Pixar’s Angus MacLane would helm the film, and Chris Evans would take on the role of Buzz.

WALL-E is unlike any other Pixar film. Set in the far future, humans, who left the Earth full of garbage, have since traveled off into space. But Earth isn’t completely abandoned, and a little robot named WALL-E continues the cleanup process. Soon, a robot named EVE arrives on Earth in search of life, and WALL-E is immediately smitten. Eventually, the pair travel into space and embark on a mission to bring humans back to Earth. It’s a love story, it’s a cautionary tale, and it’s a visually stunning Pixar movie masterpiece. Though the 2008 film is light on dialogue, it’s full of heart.

From the look of its first trailer, it seems Lightyear is doing its best impression of a WALL-E sequel. The Lightyear teaser showcased a world unlike the one portrayed in Toy Story. Instead, the human version of Buzz Lightyear finds himself in a futuristic setting, flying into space in rocket ships and exploring new worlds. Machinery, droid-like creatures, and robots of all kinds appear throughout the trailer, which is set to David Bowie’s emotional song “Starman.” More than any other Pixar movie, the trailer gives hints of WALL-E.

Without a WALL-E sequel on the way, Lightyear may have to do. From the futuristic setting and aesthetic to the bevy of robot cameos, everything about Lightyear evokes images of WALL-E. Like the 2008 film, the Lightyear trailer is also light on dialogue, choosing to let David Bowie’s “Starman” strike an emotional chord over images of Buzz Lightyear traveling through space and going on missions. It’s a drastically different tone from the Toy Story films, which can be as goofy as they are emotional. Additionally, the trailer introduces a computer named IVAN and a robot named ERIC. Since WALL-E popularized Pixar’s trope of using acronyms to spell out human names, the characters could hint that Lightyear and WALL-E even occur in the same universe.

Though Lightyear isn’t technically a WALL-E sequel, it could bring more than just a similar aesthetic. Pixar and Disney regularly place Easter eggs and references throughout their films. The Lightyear trailer already revealed several Easter eggs for Star Wars and even a reference to Chris Evans’ Captain America. With Lightyear having so many similarities to the look of WALL-E, a cameo from the little robot or other Easter eggs could be coming in the not-so-distant future.
