Spoiler Warning for Disney+’s Loki

Sylvie emerged on Loki at first as an evil variant of the God of Mischief, but she quickly became much more. Her complex past both in the MCU and in Marvel Comics is reflected in many hidden details in her costume. Her wardrobe pays homage to the many sources and characters which inspired her.

Certainly, comic book fans know Lady Loki is a major version of Loki from the comics, but Sylvie is another version of her entirely. In fact, she’s something of an amalgamation between Lady Loki and the Sylvie Lushton version of the Enchantress from the comics, with costume details honoring both inspirations.

10 Broken Crown

There are actually a few versions of Lady Loki in the comics and Sylvie’s unique broken crown in the MCU is a nod to one. This version of the character appeared in the 2014 comic book storyline The Tenth Realm, which established that Loki was in fact genderfluid.

The crown Sylvie wears in Loki is virtually the same as the comic version, except it doesn’t have the elongated cheek guards. The harsh angled lines of the comic version are also softer for the screen version.

9 Echoes Of Loki

The leather tunic Sylvie wears in the MCU has echoes of Loki’s MCU costumes in their green and gold Asgardian motifs. This is most prominent in the U-shaped golden insignia on her tunic, which echoes that of past Loki costumes from the movies, in particular, Thor The Dark World.

It also has vibes from the costumes of Lady Loki in the comics, especially The Tenth Realm version, where the same kind of Asgardian gold pattern is on display in both costumes of male and female Loki.

8 Hidden Blades

Everything Sylvie wears is practical, including her tunic, which features a hidden sheath for a sword on her back. Though she wears a scabbard on her belt, Sylvie also is able to conceal blades behind her back. This only becomes evident in the final episode, where fans get the best look at the back of her costume during her confrontation with He Who Remains.

The blade sheath rests on the left side of the tunic, a practical necessity as it seems Sylvie can’t conjure blades the way Loki can with his magic.

7 Green Cape

Sylvie wears a green cape to conceal her identity early on, but it actually includes some clues to her identity. The interior lining of the cape is woven in a light green fabric that echoes the vibrant greens of Loki’s past costumes in the MCU.

The cape is also cut in ornate lines that suggest it might actually be from Asgard. It’s unlikely to be from her Asgard, as Sylvie’s timeline was pruned by the Time Variance Authority after she was abducted by the organization as a child.

6 Sword Runes

A great hidden detail, and a challenging one to see in the series, are the runes engraved in the blade of Sylvie’s sword. While the exact nature and meaning of the runes are open to interpretation, it would seem they are Asgardian in origin.

This would also suggest that Sylvie at some point visited an alternate Asgard to obtain her costume and weapon. The sword also features a number of decorative designs that are most visible when Judge Ravonna Renslayer puts the sword among her trophies in her office.

5 Fingerless Gloves

Everything about Sylvie’s costume, unlike many of Loki’s, is about function. That includes her fingerless gloves. She never takes them off in the series, and the choice of gloves seems to have more to do with the use of enchantment.

Sylvie’s primary offensive tactic against the Time Variance Authority is enchanting the guards, and she may need her fingers exposed to do it. Still, she needs the gloves for combat and given her incredible skill there, Sylvie would likely rank among the best Marvel martial artists.

4 Practical Boots

The only ornamental aspect of Sylvie’s costume is in its few golden flourishes. Everything else, including her boots, is off the shelf. She wears a pair of boots clearly designed for use in any environment or situation. The soles of the boots are thick, as the guards of the TVA found out repeatedly when she kicked many of them in battle.

The boots are also very utilitarian, with a zipper allowing her to get out of them in a hurry if she has to. She doesn’t use magic to change her appearance like Loki does.

3 Kid Sylvie’s Clothes Are The Same

Sylvie is one of the best Loki variants in the series because of how unique she is. This extends to her childhood, where her royal Asgardian attire actually foreshadows her eventual adult costume. Her armor shares many design elements with her adult clothes, including the leather tunic and golden accents.

The shape of the tunic, which is sleeveless, is exactly the same as her adult version. This reflects the arrested development of Sylvie in some way, who is told by He Who Remains in the season finale to “Grow up!”

2 Arm-Length Vambraces

Her tunic is sleeveless but at a distance, it might not appear to be. Upon closer inspection, Sylvie is actually wearing vambraces that run the length of her arms. They don’t go to the shoulder though and are separate from the tunic.

Golden trim accents the top of the vambraces, but not the bottom. They would provide her with an extra layer of protection in close combat, but they’re nowhere near as padded as the armor of the guards from the Time Variance Authority.

1 Enchantress Panels

Comic book fans know the Enchantress was a major inspiration for Sylvie in the MCU. This was obvious in her name, Sylvie, and her powers, but a hidden detail in her costume really brings it home. In episode 5, the conjoined circular pattern unique to the Enchantress in the comic books is clearly visible on the forearms of Sylvie’s vambraces when she’s in the car with Mobius.

This pattern mimics the iconic symbolism of the Silver Age costume of the first Enchantress known as Amora. In the comics, Amora and Sylvie clashed at one point, and it’s one comic book storyline that could potentially play out in Loki season 2.
