Although the number of women in the esports industry is increasing, there still seems to be a lack of female players. Several organizations, such as Women of Esports, which seeks to empower women in esports through its global community and mentorship program, have attempted to counter the lack of representation by creating a forum for female esports players to thrive.

Now, the University of Roehampton in London has decided to offer a scholarship for young women who aspire to become professional esports players. The grant will include tutoring as well as access to industry professionals. In addition, recipients will receive an economic incentive of £1500 and have access to the new Roehampton Esports Arena, where they can practice and compete in organized women’s championships.

The program will also focus on healthy lifestyle practices and diversity. According to the rector of the center Anna Gough-Yates, the esports program hopes to empower new talent in the industry. Roehampton Esports has also partnered with a number of organizations, including Women in Games, the National University Esports League (NUEL), Cat Collective, Special Effect, and London Esports, to provide scholarship recipients with work placements and professional industry training.

With Women in Games, the university will host weekly women-only esports and offer networking opportunities. In addition, in collaboration with esports performance company G-Science, the university will develop a “healthy gaming” program that focuses on students’ mental and physical wellbeing. Roehampton University also has an esports society and a gaming room that allows students to create content and live streams on Twitch and YouTube.

Registration is open to all students from around the world who are interested in advancing their esports skills, though they will have to meet certain requirements depending on the esports competition, such as League of Legends, Overwatch or CS: GO, they wish to focus on. Those interested in applying can do so until August 24.

Liam Hurley, director of strategy and communications at the university, said, “Engaging our students in esports, and in associated activities such as streaming and the creation of original creative content, helps provide them with the skills – teamwork, creativity and confidence – they need to do well in whatever career they choose.”
