While the success of World of Warcraft Classic has allowed players to revisit their favorite game with rose-tinted goggles, the idea of legacy servers is not for everyone. In Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) there are often threads within the official forums asking if there are plans to ever travel back in time to the original game, but the developer has affirmed that there are no plans to revisit old content.

User MadeOfLions from the Online Team joined the discussion to address a point made by another user, and also to address the question of legacy servers, stating, “As for the ‘give us an old version of LOTRO’ thing – my answer is the same as always: why unfix all those bugs? You think it was perfect back then, but I remember our bug queues at the time and I can assure you it was not. Thirteen years of bug-fixes just disappearing? Yikes!”

There is no firm consensus among all players with regards to going backwards towards a legacy server. For every user that expressing interest in something like this, there appear to be several comments speaking against the idea, but this is to be expected. Over the years, LOTRO has evolved from a good game to one that is excellent and well-refined.

There is the matter of effort versus payoff, speaking in terms of development hours that would be needed for such a project. While Blizzard is a massive developer with the resources to have devoted an entire team to bringing Classic to life, Standing Stone Games is not.

Even if money and time were no issue, which they absolutely are, how many players would play on a classic server. Again, relative to something like World of Warcraft, LOTRO has a far smaller player base. While there are around 1.8 million registered players , the daily average count is only around 68,000 players. To fragment that figure between the current version of the game and a legacy server would only serve to splinter the population into smaller groups, which affects things like finding groups, for example.

For these reasons we are not likely to ever see a legacy server for LOTRO, or most MMORPGs for that matter outside of a select few with both the resources and player base numbers high enough to justify such an immense undertaking.
