Disgraced comedian Louis C.K. is trying his luck on a comedy comeback by selling his new stand-up special online. The special, Sorry, which was filmed during a performance this past summer at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, is the controversial comedian’s first since his 2020 Grammy-nominated Seriously, Louis C.K. The 54-year-old had previously enjoyed the status of being one of the most famous comedians in the world until sexual misconduct revelations in 2017 provided the public with an entirely different perception.

Rumors had begun about C.K.’s behavior well before the full story broke in 2017. Fellow comedian Tig Notaro was one of the first to actually cut ties with C.K. after an incident that she did not specifically describe but which was enough to put her off from continuing a working relationship or friendship with him. By 2017, the secrecy surrounding C.K.’s behavior came to an end when five women came forward to state that C.K. had masturbated in front of them. The news came as C.K. was on the verge of releasing I Love You, Daddy the directorial follow-up to his 2001 debut, Pootie Tang. As a result, the film’s distributors dropped it and C.K.’s career quickly began to unravel.

Now, some five years after revelations about C.K.’s behavior first became public knowledge, he’s back with his brand new comedy special, Sorry. The special was advertised recently during an SNL broadcast and can be purchased from C.K.’s official website for $10. The price includes a one-year streaming license on the website, as well as an HD digital file download. Reviews for the special have been mixed thus far, and as Uproxx reports, there’s no shortage of potentially controversial material in Sorry, as the comedian covers everything from pedophilia to Covid-19. A clip of the special can be seen below from Louis C.K.’s official YouTube account.

In the wake of recent reports that Sex and the City/And Just Like That star Chris Noth has been accused of sexual misconduct and rape, the timing for a new comedy special from a publicly outed sex offender is certainly not ideal. The challenge for C.K. is not one that he can overcome with his comedy, as a substantial number of people have voiced concerns that he’s never displayed genuine remorse for what he’s done. And while it may have seemed to C.K. that calling his special Sorry and performing in front of giant letters that spell the word out is a way to finally let everyone know that he regrets his actions, the truth is that the gesture could lead even more people to feel that he’s treating the issue as a joke.

At the same time, Louis C.K.’s comedy is the same as it always was, so reports that he’s telling crude jokes on a wide range of controversial subject matter shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. It’s not proof that the comedian is a terrible person; it simply underscores C.K.’s determination to continue doing what he’s always done. The real issue here is how C.K. has consistently failed to right the wrongs he’s responsible for. Hopefully, the release of Sorry will coincide with some new perspective from the comedian, but no one’s banking on that.
