Louise and Walter Simonson are comic book legends, having worked in various capacities on a number of definitive runs, and they will be reuniting in April’s X-Men Legends#3. The issue is part of a new series that will reunite some of the X-franchise’s most notable writers and artists and will tell stories set during their time on the book, with these stories filling in gaps, tying up loose ends and dangling plotlines. Walter Simonson and Louise Simonson’s run on X-Factor is fondly remembered by fans to this day, because of its mix of family dynamics and high-stakes action.
Both Louise and Walter’s credits are impressive. Louise edited Chris Claremont’s seminal X-Men run for years and helped create and write Power Pack. Walter wrote and drew The Mighty Thor in the early 80s, and it is considered by many to be the greatest run on the character ever. Louise and Walter were also responsible for the creation of X-Factor as well as the villain Apocalypse. At this time, X-Factor consisted of the five original members of the X-Men: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel. They were not known to be mutants at the time, so they posed as “mutant hunters” to operate in public, while secretly helping the mutant cause while they were at it. During the Simonsons’ run, Angel was seemingly killed in action only to return as the horrifying Archangel. And now Walter and Louise will reunite to tell one last X-Factor story, set during their legendary run.
In a press release, Marvel gave readers their first tantalizing look at the title. Apocalypse was a major thorn in the team’s side, and during the course of the book, they took control of Apocalypse’s sentient spaceship, called “Ship.” Shortly after acquiring it, it begins to malfunction, and the team learns Apocalypse may not be done with them yet.
The Simonson’s X-Factor is a seminal book, and one that helped shape the X-Franchise for years to come; Apocalypse is perhaps the two’s most lasting contribution to the mythos. It will be a treat for long-time X-Factor fans to see the two back in action. The preview image provided by Marvel is classic Walt Simonson and shows the original team in action.
The X-Men Legends series promises to be a nostalgic blast from the past for fans of the franchise, offering them new tales from legendary creators. While these stories will fill in gaps in continuity, they will also serve to remind fans why the original stories were so great in the first place.
