There are several differences between Love Island USA and the original British Love Island series, and the fans could benefit from knowing these changes in the format. Many fans may not know this, but the Love Island hit series that premiered in the UK in 2015 was not actually the original TV show. Actually, ITV launched a celebrity competition all the way back in 2005 that was called Celebrity Love Island. During its second season in 2006, the series included anonymous people as well, and therefore it dropped the Celebrity part of the title. However, the show was short-lived and ended after that second year.
Ten years later, ITV decided to reboot the Love Island concept, and this is the show that the fans have come to know and love in recent years. Featuring a cast of anonymous singles looking for love, the first season of the Love Island reboot premiered in June 2015. Jess and Max won that first season, which showed promise but would’ve benefitted from further development. In the following year, Love Island season 2 became a huge hit with the British and global public. The show has been a huge success ever since, with ever-growing ratings and social media following through the years. Then, in 2019, CBS launched its own Love Island USA.
Love Island USA and the British Love Island series have quite a few differences. Some of them are straightforward, while others are less so. First and foremost, the grand prize for the UK edition is £50,000, which equates to about $65,000. But in the US, the winning couples are awarded $100,000. The first two British Love Island seasons were around 40 days, but modern summer seasons last 60 days long. As such, they allow the fans to get to know all of the islanders better. For reference, Love Island UK season 5 introduced 36 islanders in 58 days. Alternatively, Love Island USA season 2 introduced 31 islanders in 40 days. All in all, this contributes to the revolving-door sensation that the American seasons have conveyed during these first two seasons. Speaking of newbies, the British Love Island introduced the Casa Amor twist on its third season. In the US, the show introduced Casa Amor on season 2.
The original Love Island is filmed in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, which is a small municipality on the island of Mallorca, Spain. With the announcement of a winter season, ITV moved the villa to Cape Town, South Africa for that season. In the American edition, the show was set to film every year in Fiji. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced CBS to move the show’s second season to Las Vegas, Nevada instead. Last but not least, the UK edition was hosted by Caroline Flack between 2015 and 2019. Following her passing, Laura Whitmore took on the role. The series is narrated by comedian Iain Stirling. Alternatively, the Love Island USA team consists of host Arielle Vandenberg and narrator Matt Hoffman.
