Publisher Koei Tecmo has announced that Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV will be heading west on February 28, 2020. The latest entry in its long-running strategy series, the news was accompanied by a trailer and gigantic info dump on the title’s various features. With this, we finally have a good idea of how XIV will play and it certainly sounds promising.

For starters, the action in XIV will take place on a single map. This is reminiscent of the Civilization series, which is clearly where Romance of the Three Kingdoms draws inspiration. Due to this massive map being accessible all at once, enemies and other nations will be able to interact with your rulers spontaneously. You’ll never know when the world has its eyes turned on you, so you’ll need to be sneaky if you intend to play by dubious means.

As well as that, nearly 1,000 unique officers will be present in XIV’s cast. Since the Dynasty Warriors series shares inspiration with Romance of the Three Kingdoms (both are based on the Chinese historical drama of the same name), this likely means series favorites will be making an appearance. One can expect to see Lu Bu and not pursuit him, as is typical.

There’s also a breakdown of how officers will conduct battle when out in the fields. By assigning specific rulers to certain armies, officers can employ tactics they know to cut down on enemy numbers with ease. Some officers will have unique traits, as well, which can be triggered under specific circumstances. It’ll be a tricky balancing act to match up officers with the proper troops.

In another mechanic taken from Civilization, players will be able to build various outputs on the battlefield to aid their military forces. Watchtowers can automatically attack nearby enemies and different obstacles -such as city walls- can stop enemy troops in their tracks. Different officers and leaders will have access to unique buildings, with “Stone Soldiers” being name-dropped as one.

More information about Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV can be found on Koei Tecmo’s official website. The game will be launching on PS4 and PC (via Steam) when it does release in February.
