Warning: SPOILERS for Lucifer Season 5, Part 2.

In Lucifer season 5, part 2, God (Dennis Haysbert) adopts The Rock’s catchphrase “Can you smell what I’m cookin’?” but He doesn’t credit Dwayne Johnson for the line. The arrival of Lucifer Morningstar’s (Tom Ellis) father on Earth causes the Devil a great deal of consternation, whether it’s God inviting Lucifer to an awkward family dinner, turning the Devil’s life into a musical, or taking mortal form and accompanying Lucifer on cases with Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). But as much as Lucifer complains about his heavenly dad, Dwayne Johnson might also have a beef with God.

Dwayne Johnson, in his mega-popular WWE wrestling persona The Rock, made the catchphrase “Can you smell what I’m cooking?” a part of pop culture. Johnson explained in his 1999 autobiography The Rock Says… that the phrase essentially means “do you understand what I’m saying?” and that Dwayne first heard it while he played football for the University of Miami (as shown in Young Rock). When Johnson said it backstage at a WWE show and it got a laugh, he decided to make it part of his wrestling character. The Rock first said, “If you smell what I’m cooking” at WrestleMania 14 in 1998 during an interview segment with Ginnifer Flowers. Johnson soon added The Rock’s signature of referring to himself in the third person to his catchphrase and it evolved into, “If you smell what The Rock is cookin’.” The Rock adds plenty of elaborate flourishes to the word “smell” to draw it out and it became the final stamp that ends his crowd-pleasing WWE promos.

However, in Lucifer, God apparently has never heard The Rock cut a promo and attributed the catchphrase to Dr. Linda Martin (Rachael Harris). The first time God heard Linda say, “You smell what I’m cookin’?” was in Lucifer season 5, episode 10, “Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam,” when Lucifer and his dad sought Linda’s help in therapy. After listening to the Devil complain about his father and God absolve Himself of any blame, Dr. Harris completely lost it and tore into both celestial beings. When Linda was done haranguing the confused Lucifer and God, she finished with “You smell what I’m cookin’?” Lucifer tried to apologize and excuse his therapist’s behavior but God understood Linda and the good points she made, and the almighty assured Dr. Martin, “I believe I smell what you’re cooking.”

By Lucifer season 5, episode 14, “Nothing Lasts Forever,” God has decided to retire and He throws himself a retirement party BBQ cookout for all of his archangel children. When Lucifer and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) went to speak to their father, who was busy grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, God welcomed His sons and joked, “Can you smell what I’m cookin’? I learned that phrase from Linda.” Amusingly, God cooks a great deal in Lucifer season 5, part 2, and He proved himself to be a master chef, so He fully embraced the double entendre of Linda’s catchphrase.

Lucifer references plenty of real-world pop culture, as well as creating its own for the Netflix series, so it’s not 100 percent clear whether The Rock is a world-famous former WWE wrestler-turned-movie star in Lucifer’s universe. Therefore it’s possible that Dr. Linda Martin did invent “Can you smell what I’m cookin’?” in Lucifer’s reality. Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson popularized the catchphrase but The Rock also has plenty of other well-known sayings like “Laying the smackdown,” “Know your role and shut your mouth,” and “It doesn’t matter what your name is!” So maybe The Rock will let God slide and allow Him to keep thinking Dr. Linda Martin invented “Can you smell what I’m cookin’?” in Lucifer.
