Lucifer Why The Devil Deserved To Become [SPOILER]

Warning: SPOILERS for Lucifer season 5, part 2.

Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) became God at the end of Lucifer season 5 and the Devil deserved the ‘promotion’ because it paid off his entire journey throughout his titular series. Lucifer’s father, God’s (Dennis Haysbert) decision to retire after spending time on Earth with his sons Lucifer and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside), created a competition between Lucifer and his wicked twin brother Michael for the throne of Heaven. It seems this was God’s plan all along and Lucifer’s triumph was God’s desired result.

While everything in Lucifer can be attributed to God’s plan, the villainous Michael set events in motion when he took Amenadiel’s place at God’s side in Heaven. Thanks to Michael manipulating his father, God came to believe that He was losing control of His powers. In reality, Michael was exploiting self-actualization, which is a trait shared by celestial beings in Lucifer. Michael then came to Earth to impersonate his twin brother Lucifer and caused enough chaos to force God to leave Heaven. While God was on Earth, He realized He wanted to retire. With Lucifer’s help, God reunited with His estranged wife, the Goddess (Tricia Helfer), and they departed for her universe together.

Michael’s ambition to fill the vacuum and become God was thwarted by Lucifer, who also decided that he should be God. The twin archangels turned it into an election with both Michael and Lucifer asking for the support of their archangel siblings, although Michael stacked the deck in his favor and rallied more to his side. But what Michael didn’t understand is that becoming God can’t be done through voting or settled by war. Ultimately, Michael didn’t deserve the throne of Heaven. It was Lucifer who emerged as the victor because he showed the necessary growth and made the crucial sacrifice to earn Godhood. Most importantly, Lucifer’s desire to become God was born out of love for Chloe Decker (Lauren German), and this is why Lucifer Morningstar is the only one who truly deserved to become God in Lucifer’s universe.

Why Lucifer Was Destined To Become God

Lucifer Why The Devil Deserved To Become [SPOILER]

Ironically, Lucifer’s long road to becoming God (and deserving it) actually began when he rebelled in Heaven and tried to overthrow God millennia ago. God cast Lucifer down into Hell and made him rule the underworld, making him the Devil who was responsible for torturing all of the souls of the damned. Of course, Lucifer saw this as punishment for his rebellion, and it was. Further, Lucifer hated God for it and this became one of his defining traits. But many of Lucifer’s siblings, including Michael, still saw their brother’s punishment as a reward because he was the only archangel who was given his own kingdom.

Lucifer was banished from Heaven but he also wasn’t forced to stay in Hell. The Devil was often free to go to Earth and he spent a great deal of time with humanity, although Amenadiel would always take Lucifer back to take his place in Hell. Yet Lucifer’s ample time spent on Earth saw him meet and influence numerous pivotal historical figures like Nero, William Shakespeare, Napoleon, Oscar Wilde, Elvis Presley, and Elton John. As a result, and especially because the Devil relished in accommodating their darkest desires, Lucifer came to understand humanity in a more complete way than any of the other angels, who primarily looked down on humans as lesser beings.

Lucifer’s affinity for humans and the sheer amount of time he spent among people is something no other angel can boast, and God Himself has never lived among humans the way the Devil has. Lucifer’s thorough understanding of humans, good and bad, is a crucial element that makes him worthy of being God. Lucifer also boasts free will – as God said, He gave his son “a lifetime of choice” – and it took eons for Lucifer to understand that he controlled his own destiny all along. Hence, Lucifer was free to leave Hell and become a Los Angeles nightclub owner/consultant to the LAPD, where he spent five years helping people alongside Chloe Decker. It’s also important that Lucifer surrounded himself and enjoys the friendship of genuinely good people like Chloe, Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia), Dr. Linda Martin (Rachael Harris), and Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro), who accept Lucifer’s faults but believe the good in the Devil.

Lucifer’s Sacrifice For Chloe Made Him Worthy To Be God

Lucifer Why The Devil Deserved To Become [SPOILER]

Lucifer’s love for Chloe, whom God created for His son as a “gift”, is perhaps the most pivotal reason why the Devil deserved to become God. Although his therapist, Linda, may question how much Lucifer has really changed or how much she has actually helped him, the truth is, she has. Lucifer’s significant personal and emotional growth for the last five years was driven by his desire to be “worthy” of his beloved “detective”, as was the Devil’s choice to become the new God. Michael and the other angels mocked Lucifer for wanting to become God out of love for a human, but there is actually no better reason to want Godhood than love. This is something Michael simply didn’t understand, which makes Lucifer’s wicked twin unworthy.

Michael (and Lucifer) also didn’t realize that you can’t become God by winning an election or a war. Lucifer achieved Godhood because he sacrificed himself for Chloe out of pure love. When Michael killed Chloe, she foiled the bad angel’s plan by absolving herself of her guilt over Dan’s death so she would go to Heaven. Despite his own banishment and the death sentence it entails, Lucifer went to Heaven and brought Chloe back to life by gifting her Lilith’s (Lesley-Ann Brandt) ring, which grants the wearer immortality and was the only reason Lucifer temporarily survived entering Heaven. Lucifer giving up his own life for Chloe and finally telling the detective “I love you” completed the Devil’s journey and allowed him to be resurrected as God.

What Kind Of God Will Lucifer Be?

Lucifer Why The Devil Deserved To Become [SPOILER]

Thanks to his love for Chloe, Lucifer earned Godhood and the Devil was the only one who could have, including Amenadiel. If everything can be described as God’s plan, then this was the end result of a very long game Lucifer’s father set into motion from the very beginning, and certainly during the events of Lucifer’s five seasons. Of course, Lucifer is the star of his eponymous series so it was always going to be the Devil who triumphed in the end, but the maxi-story of Lucifer is about the Devil ultimately being the only one worthy of ruling the universe in God’s stead, which is a remarkable moral to the story.

The question for Lucifer season 6 is what kind of God the Devil will be? Is God right that Lucifer might actually be able to do the job better than He did? After all, there is no other celestial being besides the Creator who understands the good and bad of people more than Lucifer because the Devil has the most experience living with humans. It also remains to be seen whether Lucifer is truly God, completely with God’s omniscience and omnipotence, and how that will change (or not change) the wickedly delightful Devil fans have come to love. No doubt, Lucifer will also make his share of mistakes (like God Himself admits he did), but whatever will happen to conclude the series in Lucifer season 6, the Devil became God because he truly deserved it.
