A number of artists involved in Pokémon 25: The Album have released videos explaining their unique contributions to the musical tribute. 2021 marks the 25-year anniversary of the franchise, which began back in 1996. Pokémon 25: The Album was announced back in February, and it is set to include contributions from world-famous performers such as Katy Perry, Post Malone, Mabel and Vince Staples when it launches on October 15.

To honor 25 years of monster collecting fun, The Pokémon Company commissioned the creation of Pokémon 25: The Album. The musical celebration will feature a long list of artists, with many of them returning after previous involvement with the franchise. Katy Perry, J Balvin, Post Malone, Mabel, Cyn and Vince Staples are just a few of the 11 artists paying tribute to Pokémon through music. Back in May 2021 Katy Perry released the Pokémon “Electric” music video, which sees Perry and Pikachu team up to time-travel and spy on their younger selves.

In a new series of videos from The Official Pokémon YouTube Channel, artists from Pokémon 25: The Album explain their contributions to the monster collection collaboration. Mabel, alongside her pal Jigglypuff, explains that her song “Take It Home” is based on the idea of true friendship. Imagination and growth are also a focus for the singer, who expresses admiration for Jigglypuff’s song-based powers. Cyn and Ponyta break down the singer’s song “Wonderful,” which focuses on childhood and personal growth. Cyn also explains that Pokémon teaches timeless lesson such as perseverance and hard work. Finally, Vince Staples and Snorlax present “Got ‘Em,” which incorporates Pokémon-inspired beats into a hip-hop tune. Vince Staples draws optimism and joy from the Pokémon franchise, though sadly he says he is unable to nap as efficiently as Snorlax.

While Pokémon 25: The Album is perhaps the most unique tribute to the franchise’s 25th time around the sun, 2021 has had many other commemorative releases. A Pokémon anniversary video released in March took fans through the evolution of the series, beginning as just a video game and becoming one of the most popular franchises in the world. The 20-minute long celebration goes through every video game generation, the trading card game, the various anime series, and even features the President of The Pokémon Company, Tsunekazu Ishihara.

Seeing as Pokémon is beloved by fans around the world, and its 25-year anniversary is therefore a big deal. From video games to anime series, the franchise’s colorful cast of creatures has appeared in every form of entertainment media. Each of these adaptations, from video games to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, are paying tribute in its own unique way. However, Pokémon 25: The Album may be the most personal and unique tribute to come in 2021. With 14 songs all inspired by the iconic franchise, and performed by fans of the Pokémon world, the album will be a touching tribute when it releases on October 15.
