Some intriguing Mad Max 2 hints have surfaced, potentially revealing that this sequel started development at Avalanche Studios before the Covid-19 pandemic. It is unknown whether the project was scrapped or if it’s still on track to launch one day.

The original Mad Max was never considered a hit, despite being a solid example of an open-world action game with pretty decent sales numbers. The game currently stands at 91% positive ratings on Steam, showing how much players have enjoyed it over the years. However, there was never a single teaser for a potential sequel — until now.

As originally pointed out by ResetEra, digital researcher Wendy W. Fox shared a post of herself going through a 3D photogrammetry scanning session at Avalanche Studios in New York. The original tweet was posted over a week ago but went completely unnoticed. According to Wendy Fox, the image was taken in the “before times”, referencing the pre-pandemic days, when she was invited to the studio to appear in Mad Max 2 as a rebel.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all she revealed, without delving too much into the project’s details or its current state. As far as we know, there’s little chance that she might be mistaken here as the original Mad Max didn’t use photogrammetry or facial scans for its character models. Fox is unlikely to confuse the post-apocalyptic setting with Rage 2 either, as there were no rebels in this FPS which was also set in the wasteland.

The “before times” line means Avalanche Studios worked on the game over three years ago. It’s unknown if Mad Max 2 was eventually cancelled due to the pandemic, yet there’s a possibility the game still lives. Perhaps the studio intends to launch the sequel to coincide with the upcoming Furiosa movie that’s currently planned for a May 24, 2024 release.

Naturally, all the above should be labeled as rumors at this point until the developer Avalanche or the publisher Warner Bros. Interactive confirms Mad Max 2 is indeed in development.
