The player who will appear on the cover of Madden NFL 22 has supposedly been leaked by GameStop. The Madden NFL series, which lets players recreate America’s favorite sport in a digital setting, has received annual new releases for about three decades. Most modern installments in the series feature a cover athlete, typically a player who is particularly popular at the time of the game’s release.

The Madden NFL series prides itself on giving fans an authentic and realistic football experience. To this end, multiple updates to last year’s Madden NFL 21 have recently been released to make the title better reflect real-life practices within the National Football League. A recent patch to the game’s Franchise mode changed the way that quarterbacks are drafted in the game, making the system more believable. The system will now ensure that an opposing team, typically controlled by artificial intelligence, will not replace quarterbacks too quickly. An even more recent update to Madden NFL 21’s Franchise mode made player trades fairer and more realistic by evaluating how valuable a player is to a specific team, rather than using a more generic scale of value.

An apparent leak by GameStop, reported by YouTuber DOMG, suggests that Derrick Henry will be the cover star for this year’s Madden NFL 22. Henry is a running back for the Tennessee Titans, bearing the fitting number 22, and since his 2016 induction into the league he has earned numerous different records and accolades. In the 2020 NFL season Henry lead the league in rushing yards and touchdowns, with his impressive rushing game earning him the nickname “King Henry.” The apparent leak of Madden 22’s cover comes from a GameStop flier advertising pre-orders for the game.

Madden NFL is a huge franchise for both gamers and sports fans, representing an important middle ground for these two massive fanbases. The video game was even used in an attempt to predict the winner of this year’s Super Bowl, though the prediction turned out to be incorrect. A simulated game run within Madden 21 saw the Kansas City Chiefs claim victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, although Super Bowl LV actually turned out in favor of Tampa Bay.

Each year’s Madden NFL cover is a great opportunity to give some popular football stars even more exposure. In recent years all-star players such as Terrell Owens, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson have been featured on the covers of the series’ annual releases. Derrick Henry is one of the NFL’s greatest running backs, and although his presence on the cover of Madden NFL 22 is not confirmed it would be an undoubtedly great pick.
