Magneton In Pokémon Sword & Shield Now Evolves With A Thunder Stone

It seems that the Pokémon series is phasing out location-based evolutions in the current generation of games. It’s now possible to evolve Pokémon like Magneton with the aid of a Thunder Stone, rather than taking it to a specific place.

The Pokémon series introduced the concept of location-based evolutions in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. In order for certain Pokémon to evolve, they had to level up in specific locations. This applied to Magneton, Nosepass, and Charjabug in Special magnetic fields, Eevee with an Ice Rock (for Glaceon), and Eevee with a Moss Rock (for Leafeon). Not every region had these specific locations, so the only way to acquire these evolutionary forms was through trade.

Pokémon Sword & Shield has already removed the location-based evolutionary requirements for the Eevee line, as the player can now make it evolve into a Glaceon or Leafeon with the help of an Ice Stone or Leaf Stone. It has now been confirmed that the Isle of Armor is removing these restrictions for other Pokémon as well, as Magneton now evolves into Magnezone through using a Thunder Stone.

It makes sense to remove the location-based evolutions, as it forced the developers to include compatible areas in games released after Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. This wouldn’t be much of a problem in the Galar region, as there are compatible areas for a magnetic field, Ice Rock, and Moss Rock, but it could limit the design of the series in the future, so best to get rid of them now when other aspects of the mainline games are changing.

A lot of the harsh evolutionary requirements have been made easier since the days of Pokémon X & Y when trading Pokémon online became more of an integrated part of the games. The trade evolutions that were once the bane of players who could only enjoy the Pokémon series on emulators are now easy to overcome, while evolution stones are given away in abundance in Max Raid battles. The evolutionary pitfalls of the previous generations are pretty much gone and it’s easier than ever to fill out the Pokédex.

The Isle of Armor expansion for Pokémon Sword & Shield is available now.
