Warning: contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier #2!

Even before it began, Infinite Frontier promised to resurrect a host of DC Comics heroes, with Dark Nights: Death Metal #7 confirming that the new, merged multiverse would come with some familiar faces. Roy Harper, aka Arsenal, was the first resurrection revealed, but Infinite Frontier #2 just presented fans with a way bigger list. The Justice Society of America has returned, but there’s a disturbing caveat.

Infinite Frontier has been making major changes to DC continuity, with heroes and villains returning without the need to change or retcon their deaths. With all the changes, hero/villain alliance the Totality are trying to take an inventory of changes to reality. This team includes Martian Manhunter, Mister Terrific, Vandal Savage, Lex Luthor, Hawkgirl, and Talia al-Ghul. Green Lantern Alan Scott was also recently invited to the team and accepted, though his membership may be in question after this issue’s events.

Created by Joshua Williamson, Xermanico, Jesús Merino, Norm Rapmund, Paul Pelletier, Romulo Fajardo, Jr., and Tom Napolitano, Infinite Frontier #2 includes a check-in with the Totality. After the mysterious explosion at the Justice Society Headquarters in Infinite Frontier #1, the team begins investigating and evaluating what they currently know. Mister Terrific reveals that while heroes have been returning since the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, several members of the Justice Society of America are missing. These members are shown in a hologram. As revealed previously, Jade is missing, but so are numerous others.

The members included in the hologram are Jade, Power Girl, Damage, Hourman, Wildcat, Doctor Midnight, and Atom Smasher. While they had all returned following the creation of the Omniverse, they are now reportedly missing – with no explanation as to their whereabouts or the circumstances of their disappearances. Mister Terrific also mentions the original Flash (Jay Garrick), Jakeem Thunder, Stargirl (Courtney Whitmore), Liberty Belle/Jesse Quick, and Starman (Jack Knight). These members have returned and are accounted for, though some have memory issues relating to Infinite Frontier’s merging of different continuities.

While their whereabouts are unknown, if these heroes returned in a similar fashion to Roy Harper, they could be targets for whatever powerful force has been chasing him down over the series so far. This issue of Infinite Frontier provides more questions than answers, yet it does emphasize that many heroes are returning and have yet to be accounted for. Fans were excited for the return of Captain Atom in this issue, but while the hero appeared to have been reborn, it turned out he had actually been replaced by a mysterious doppelganger. The possibilities of who could show up next in this series are endless, but fans should also keep in mind that some of these “returns” aren’t what they seem. On top of this, heroes who have returned are clearly in danger – likely connected to the return of Darkseid, who has a dark plan to bring an end to DC’s new continuity.

With a surge in popularity of teams like the Justice Society thanks to DC’s other entertainment projects – such as Stargirl within the Arrowverse – it is nice to see the team’s return in the comics. Considering the family connections shared by some of these heroes (Green Lantern, Obsidian, and Jade), this mystery also adds to conflict between the heroes who are left trying to pick up the pieces in a confused and traumatized world, as Alan Scott proves when he ditches the team to search for his daughter. The consequences of these returns and disappearances are likely to be massive. DC Comics is making some very big moves with Infinite Frontier.
