Majora’s Mask Had The Legend of Zelda’s BEST (& Longest) Side Quest

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask contains a lot of puzzles and difficult side quests, but Anju and Kafei’s lengthy mission is by far the hardest.

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is perhaps one of the most jam-packed games of its time, especially in terms of side content, and the lover’s quest between Anju and Kafei may just be the most complicated side quest of them all. Majora’s Mask is a cult-classic game that uses the manipulation of time to prevent the world’s end in just three short days, and despite the evil plans of Link’s old friend Skull Kid or the Moon’s doom and gloom looming over his head, Link still finds time (or makes time) to improve the lives of the citizens of Clock Town.

Anju and Kafei’s side quest entry in the Bomber’s Notebook is long, difficult, and dramatic, but it is possibly a more rewarding use of a player’s time than even the main story line. To begin, it’s important to know that this isn’t an early-game side quest. The lovers’ sequence is going to require Link to already possess a few items, namely the Hookshot, the Romani Mask, the Garo’s Mask, and Epona’s Song (and access to Ikana Canyon). Once he’s got those in his arsenal, Link needs to head back to the Dawn of the First Day and he can begin fighting for true love!

On the night of Day 1, the player may notice an old woman in North Clock town getting burgled by a bald jogger. While instinct may say to save her, Link MUST NOT step in. This will be important later in this Majora’s Mask side quest. Instead, Link should take some time that first day before noon to head over to East Clock town and speak with the Mayor’s wife. She’ll tell him her son Kafei is missing, and she’ll grant him the Kafei Mask.

Anju & Kafei, Day One

Upon further investigating, Link can find a back room in which he can read Kafei’s journal explaining his intended marriage to Anju. Once that’s completed, Link can head on over to the Stock Pot Inn and meet Anju. If players already have the Goron’s Mask, they can claim a reservation at the Inn if Link speaks to her as a Goron in the afternoon. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it does give him access to the Inn after hours, making things a lot easier (and the room has 100 rupees in a chest!). The Postman will deliver a letter to Anju that first day – once he does, the player should speak to her wearing the Kafei Mask. Through tears, Anju will ask Link to meet her in the Inn that night (if the Goron disguise bit isn’t possible, players still can access the Inn via the top floor after hours). Anju gives young Link a letter meant for Kafei.

This letter can serve two purposes: By sticking that in a mail box, the Postman will do his thing on Day 2, and the Lovers’ Quest continues. However, if Legend of Zelda players are in need of a piece of heart, they can hand that letter off to the odd toilet person in the Inn. Players should note, though, that this brings the original side quest to a halt and it must be restarted, so Link should choose wisely!

Anju & Kafei, Day Two

The Postman will deliver to Kafei around 3 pm on the Second Day. While Kafei is getting his mail, Link needs to sneak into Kafei’s home in the Laundry Pool and wait for him. He’ll come back and explain the sordid tale of how he was transformed into a child by Skull Kid, and that Sakon (the jogging bald burglar from the First Night) has stolen his beloved Sun Mask.

Upon finishing this dialogue, he will bestow Majora’s Mask’s Link with a Pendant of Memories, which he should promptly head out and give to Anju at the Inn. This ensures that Anju won’t leave town on the Final Day. On the evening of the second night, players can catch a scene in the Curiosity Shop (West Clock Town) in which Sakon sells the bag he stole off the old woman. This is why Link didn’t save her that first night – because Kafei is watching and now can follow Sakon to his hideout.

Anju & Kafei, Day Three

On the Dawn of the Third Day, Link should head over to Kafei’s house again. The Curiosity Shop Owner will meet him there and give him the Keaton Mask and something special for Kafei’s mother (this is unrelated – you’ll have to complete the whole sequence twice to give this to her in the Milk Bar to receive an extra bottle on the night of Majora’s Mask’s Third Day). This third night is when the real fun begins. By warping to Ikana Canyon around 6 pm, and heading through the dark passage near the river, the player will meet Kafei, and when night falls Sakon will show up as well.

Hide from Sakon (the Stone Mask makes Link invisible if it’s been found by this point), and soon Kafei will stealthily pursue him into his hideout. Link must follow Kafei, and it’s inside this hideout that there will be a series of switches to activate, blocks to push, and enemies to defeat with Kafei’s help. Once the puzzles are complete, Kafei gets the Sun Mask and immediately heads back to town. Link can then warp back to Clock Town and meet the lovers at the Stock Pot Inn around 4:30 am.

It’s here they will spend their final moments together, give Link the Couples Mask, express their love while simultaneously filling out Link’s Bomber’s Notebook! Player’s should watch the clock, however, as this quest doesn’t leave much time left before the end of the world! Once this Majora’s Mask side quest is completed, wearing the Couple’s Mask will change how characters around the world interact with Link, so players also get some additional content for all their hard work!

Players should be aware that if they stay in town rather than going to Ikana Canyon, they can hand off the note to the Postman who will deliver it to Mama and subsequently grant Link with the Postman’s Hat. This happens at the same time as the events at Sakon’s hideout, so, unlike most Legend of Zelda games, Link must choose one or the other. There are numerous other moments within this Majora’s Mask side quest that are optional that include character development and some great content, so players shouldn’t be afraid to chat around and explore. Link needs to make sure he is keeping one eye on that clock at all times, though!

Players would be smart to keep a log of the hours of operation of the Inn and the Mayor’s Office just in case (and check the Bomber’s notebook frequently). Anju and Kafei are counting on Link to make sure they end their quests together. One missed moment, and their story becomes perhaps more tragic than any others’ within the Legend of Zelda franchise. Majora’s Mask is one of the darkest installments in the Zelda universe, but if players do things right, they’ll leave the game with all sorts of fuzzy feelings that they made a difference in the characters’ lives. And if a player manages to do the Lovers’ Quest in one shot, they deserve to become a true Bomber!
