The man who leaked the existence of the Nintendo Switch has pled guilty and could face up to 20 years in prison for some of the things found in his home.

Keeping anything a secret and legitimately surprising someone with a release or reveal is difficult in the present day, if not impossible. Information tends to get into the mainstream before developers and manufacturers want it to all the time.

Hackers and dataminers are also eager to find information and offer it up to the masses before the keeper of that information ever intended. One of the biggest leaks of the past few years, and one that would have infuriated Nintendo bosses, was the Switch leak. Someone told the world that the Switch was coming, forever taking that initial reveal away from the console’s creators.

That man was Ryan Hernandez, who has since pled guilty to hacking Nintendo, reports The Verge. According to the DOJ, Hernandez phished a Nintendo employee in 2016 in order to gain access to confidential information. Despite being warned by the FBI of the consequences of his hacking a year later, and Hernandez admitting that he understood the gravity of the situation, he continued to leak otherwise undisclosed information relating to Nintendo.

The DOJ went on to say that Hernandez would brag about his wrongdoings on various forums, revealing Nintendo’s vulnerabilities to others. In June of 2019, the FBI raided Hernandez’s home and found thousands of confidential Nintendo files. However, those files weren’t the worst thing awaiting the raiding agents. Hernandez has also been charged with possession of child pornography.

Hernandez has agreed to pay Nintendo more than $250,000 in restitution costs as a part of his plea agreement. However, he still faces a pretty lengthy prison sentence — up to five years for the trouble he caused Nintendo, and up to 20 years for the possession of child pornography.
