Some believe that the concept of a multiverse is at the core of Manifest’s central mystery. The idea of an alternate reality being at play hasn’t been seriously considered by Ben (Josh Dallas) and the rest of the Flight 828 passengers, but it has been discussed quite a bit by fans.
Since the beginning of the NBC series, the main characters have been determined to find out what really happened to Flight 828 and everyone on board when it disappeared for five and a half years. In the season 3 premiere of Manifest, Ben theorized that resurrection was the explanation for what happened. Finding the tailfin made Ben reach the conclusion that everyone died and was brought back to life years later, possibly due to the intervention of a divine force. Ben believes that this fate was shared by Zeke (Matt Long), the meth addicts, and everyone else who has experienced this phenomenon. The problem with Ben’s hypothesis is that it ignores the hints from season 2. A Calling that revealed the passengers temporarily co-existed with a 16th-century ship served as an indication that Flight 828 was actually traveling in time.
A third theory postulates that resurrection nor Flight 828 time traveling to Al-Zuras’ era is the answer the passengers are looking for. Instead, it could be that Flight 828 that landed at the airport in the Manifest season 3 finale is from a parallel universe. The idea is primarily based on the discovery of the tailfin. Though Ben has taken it as evidence for their resurrection, it could mean something else entirely. Just as Ben says, Flight 828 really may have crashed, with everyone dying as a result. But rather than being brought back to life, they could have stayed dead. If that’s true, that would mean Ben, Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh), Saanvi (Parveen Kaur), and all others aren’t the same people who left.
They could be the alternate timeline counterparts of the dead Flight 828 passengers and connected disappearances and vanishings, such as Zeke and the meth addicts. In their universe, the plane survived the crash. According to these alternate reality theories, they must have crossed through an interdimensional wormhole linked in some way to the storm. Also, for this to be correct, there must be multiple points where people can take the places of their doppelgangers since so many other characters have been subjected to this experience. As for why they would have Death Dates though, that remains unclear. While this isn’t necessarily a “good” explanation, some think they may be the universe’s way of setting things right.
Should the show choose to go that way, an alternate reality reveal in Manifest would disprove the resurrection theory but it might be compatible with its time travel connections from season 2. Some disturbance in the universe may be causing all sorts of strange anomalies across time and space, which are causing characters to move to different realities and possibly through time as well (which could be why they reappeared five years after their original disappearance). If this is indeed the direction Manifest was headed, it could be that season 4 was going to dive into it more directly. The passengers may have found out that a parallel universe was the true destination of both Cal (Jack Messina) and Captain Daly (Frank Deal) in the season 3 finale.
