According to Teikoku Databank, a firm that conducts research into business activity, game developer AlphaDream has filed bankruptcy with the Tokyo District Court. By March 2018, the company was 465 million yen, or $4.32 million USD, in debt.

Per Anime News Network, AlphaDream had apparently been performing poorly in the market in the last few years, failing to bring in enough revenue to make up for the deficit garnered through various developed games throughout the years.

AlphaDream is renowned for its work on the Mario & Luigi RPG games. These games include Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. It’s also worth mentioning that AlphaDream worked on remakes for two of the games in the series, including Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey for Nintendo 3DS.

The Mario & Luigi RPG series had spawned some of the highlights on Nintendo’s handheld consoles. Furthermore, the series acted as a spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG, which was one of the best JRPGs of the SNES era. The games were very well-written and inserted a dose of humor not really seen in a Mario game since Super Mario RPG.

As such, many are likely to find it a shame that AlphaDream is going under. This calls into question who will take up the Mario RPG mantle, or if anyone will.

This also causes one to question the actual success of the Mario & Luigi RPG series. As acclaimed as its games were, one would be led to reason that AlphaDream is a successful and profitable development studio. However, this bankruptcy tells players that perhaps the games weren’t as commercially successful as they were critically.

Elsewhere in the Mario realm, Mario Kart Tour is currently at the forefront. While a recent update had fixed some bugs associated with the game, it is still keeping its microtransactions. Furthermore, the second titular Luigi of the Mario & Luigi series has been treated as a second-class character by not even appearingmario in Mario Kart Tour.

Hopefully, the Mario & Luigi RPG series will crop up again soon and be taken over by just as talented a studio.
