Tom Holland upped his workout regime for Uncharted so he wouldn’t “look like a child” next to Mark Wahlberg. The Spider-Man star will appear alongside Wahlberg in the long-awaited movie adaptation of the popular video-game series, Uncharted. The film will see Holland star as Nathan Drake, an adventurer who travels the world with his mentor Victor Sullivan, or Sully (played by Wahlberg) as they journey to a number of ‘uncharted’ territories in search of lost treasures.

Holland’s casting as Drake was largely debated online following the initial announcement that the Marvel actor would be taking on the frequently fan-cast role. Many cited the actor’s age as an area of concern when it came to his portrayal of this beloved character. Now it’s been confirmed that the film will act as somewhat of a prequel to the highly-successful game series, and will see Drake in his younger days as he comes up against rival gangs of treasure hunters as well as a number of other physical challenges during his adventures. The recently released Uncharted movie trailer teased a number of impressive action sequences and fight scenes that are sure to satisfy fans of the original franchise and Holland has often spoken about the changes he made to his workout regime in the lead-up to film, due to it’s incredibly physical nature.

Now, Holland has revealed that his Uncharted co-star served as particularly good inspiration when it came to workouts. Speaking to Total Film (via Games Radar) the star revealed that he was somewhat stunned when he first saw Wahlberg on set and that this ultimately inspired him to bulk up so that he wouldn’t look small in comparison when they were onscreen together. The actor revealed how a Covid shutdown on the film’s set meant he was able to focus on putting “a bit of timber on”. Check out Holland’s full quote below.

“When we went to set for the first time, I saw Mark Wahlberg, and Mark is massive. He is a unit. I was in good shape, but I wasn’t by any means big. We went home for five months, all I did was eat and train, eat and train, eat and train – to put a bit of timber on, to make me look not like a child next to Mark.”

This isn’t the first time Holland has shared that he was conscious of how he would appear next to Wahlberg on screen, having revealed that his co-star even acknowledged his change in physique when they reunited on set after the shutdown. Holland previously revealed that the stunt work within Uncharted will rival that of his previous work as Spider-Man, so it’s understandable that Holland would want to be in good shape for the shoot. It appears the star was incredibly keen to truly tap into his character in as many aspects as possible, as the star even took a turn at bartending to make the film look as authentic as possible.

The road to the release of Uncharted has certainly been a bumpy one, but the recent buzz that has surrounded the film following the trailer drop is likely to be welcomed by many fans who are keen to finally see Drake and Sully on the big screen. Ultimately, it is safe to assume that Holland must have been happy with how he looks next to Wahlberg, who is known for having a pretty intense workout regime himself. As for now, audiences do not have long to wait as Uncharted is set for release in early 2022.
