Iron Man was the first superhero that Marvel introduced into its Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the company began to take control of its own characters for the first time. Iron Man turned out to not only be a massive success, but it was successful enough to launch the entire MCU line of movies that have eclipsed 20 in total.

The first Iron Man movie told his origin story, Iron Man had an all-out action-adventure in his second movie, and then wrapped up his trilogy with a polarizing yet brilliant tale in the next sequel. Add in all four Avengers movies, an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and a hero battle in Captain America: Civil War, no one had a more significant role in Marvel’s movie success than Iron Man.

10 Tales Of Suspense #39: The Origin

The first Iron Man movie was his origin story, and it played out very close to the comic book origin story in Tales of Suspense #39 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Gene Colan.

Of course, that book came out in the ’60s, so it was all about Vietnam. This had to be updated to Afghanistan in the new origin, but it was the same thing. Terrorists attacked Tony Stark and demanded he make them a weapon of war, but instead, Iron Man built a suit of armor. The comic and first half of the movie share much in common.

9 Iron Man: Demon In A Bottle

Iron Man 2 had a few small moments where Tony Stark made some terrible decisions. There was a party where he got drunk and put on his Iron Man armor, causing many problems and forcing his best friend, James Rhodes, to try to force him to give up the armor.

This idea came from Iron Man #128 by David Michelinie, Bob Layton & John Romita Jr., Known as “Demon in a Bottle,” this was a one-shot issue where Stark realized he was becoming an alcoholic. Later in the run, he lost himself to the bottle and lost his armor to Rhodey.

8 The Ultimates

The Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was not the same team that formed in the first appearance in Marvel Comics. Instead, they were more closely aligned with The Ultimates’ formation by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch.

The Ultimates Universe was supposed to make the Marvel heroes updated for current times, and there were good (Spider-Man) and bad (Captain America) in the run. Iron Man in the Ultimate Universe was much closer to the MCU version than his Marvel Comics version.

7 Iron Man: Extremis

Iron Man 3 was supposed to be Iron Man against his long-time rival, The Mandarin. That looked to be the case, but it was all a red herring, making one vocal portion of the fanbase mad but creating a nice tease that led to the Extremis storyline.

The bad guys were Aldrich Killiam and AIM, and they created the Extremis program, which gave them their own super soldiers. This is the same as the comic book storyline, “Extremis,” in Iron Man Vol. 4 #1-6 by Warren Ellis, Adi Granov & Randy Gentile.

6 Iron Man #270-276: Dragon Seed Saga

For fans who were mad Iron Man didn’t fight Mandarin in Iron Man 3, there are still comics that feature the supervillain. The best of the best is from Iron Man #270-276 by John Byrne and Paul Ryan, titled “Dragon Seed Saga.” This storyline includes the origin of both The Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom.

For a more updated and less offensive version of Mandarin, try the 2007 series Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin by Joe Casey and Eric Canete.

5 Marvel’s Civil War

In 2006, Marvel decimated its superhero community with Civil War by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. There was a huge incident that destroyed a school in Stamford, killing several children.

The cause was a battle between superheroes and villains. It caused the U.S. to demand all superpowered individuals register, with Iron Man on the side of the government and Captain America on the side of freedom. It was the same as the movie, but with a different event starting the war.

4 Iron Man #225-232: Armor Wars

The next Iron Man-related MCU event will be the Disney+ series Armor Wars, which will feature James Rhodes War Machine. If that series is anything like the comic book version, it will be a massive event that will bring Rhodey into conflict with many people, good and bad.

This took place in Iron Man #225-232 by David Michelinie, Bob Layton & Mark Bright in the comic books. In this storyline, Tony Stark sets out to take all his Stark-designed weapons back from everyone by force, including the U.S. Government.

3 Iron Man #190-200: Iron Monger

The first Iron Man movie moved from his origin story with the terrorists in Afghanistan and then jumped into the battle for his company with Obadiah Stane.

However, that isn’t quite what happened with the comics. In the comics, it wasn’t until Iron Man #190-200 by Denny O’Neil and Luke McDonnell that Stane became Iron Monger. This was also when Tony Stark regained his role as Iron Mna from James Rhodes.

2 Invincible Iron Man #20-24: Stark Disassembled

In 2009, it was time for Tony Stark to step back and try to regain some of his lost humanity. He helped start a war with other heroes in Civil War and turned against Captain America and Thor. He became the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and became more of a government agent than a hero.

In “Iron Man Disassembled” in Invincible Iron Man Vol. 2 #20-24, Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca, Iron Man tried to mend fences and become a hero again.

1 Invincible Iron Man #1-7: The Five Nightmares

Head back to the start of the Invincible Iron Man Vol. 2 series by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca, and the first seven issues are from the storyline titled “The Five Nightmares.”

This was Fraction’s first work on Iron Man, and it was a huge new direction for the hero. He is the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. here and he ends up figuring out what the new face of war looks like when confronted by Obadiah Stane’s son Ezekiel. This is also the first time in a long time that the comic book Iron Man is even partially likable.
