Last year, Marvel Comics began publishing a line of comics based on the Ultraman franchise and now the publisher has announced the next book in the line, titled The Mystery of Ultraseven. The new series will be written by Kyle Higgins and Matt Groom, who wrote the previous entries in Marvel’s Ultraman line. The Mystery of Ultraseven is also part of a global expansion of the Ultraman brand.

Ultraman is one of the most popular superheroes to come out of Japan, and a cult figure worldwide. He is also one of the most enduring, with multiple television series, comics, movies, and merchandise over the last 55 years. The Ultraman brand has also found a cult following in the United States and in recent years has begun increasing its visibility. In 2019, Marvel Comics obtained the license to publish all-new Ultraman comics, and last year delivered both The Rise of Ultraman and The Trials of Ultraman. The final issue of Trials of Ultraman teased the next entry in the franchise: The Mystery of Ultraseven. Now, more details have been released about this exciting new title.

The Mystery of Ultraseven comic will continue the story of the television show of the same name that aired in Japan in 1967. Set a few years in the future, the series followed the exploits of Ultraseven as he joined forced with The Terrestrial Defense Force in protecting Earth from giant monsters. Much like Ultraman, Ultraseven originated in Nebula M78; he also has a human alias, named Dan Moroboshi. The Mystery of Ultraseven will not only mark the return of Ultraseven, but also connect the dots between the various television series, movies, and comics. The franchise has also expanded into other media as well, including livestream events, such as the Ultraman Connection Live Holiday Special, happening December 17. This event, produced by Jeff Gomez, grew out of the regular Ultraman Connection Livestream, will see Tik Tok star Ian Boggs make a guest appearance, starring in a special Ultraman story created for the event.

The Mystery of Ultraseven continues the expansion of the Ultraman franchise, showing the rest of the world why he is one of Japan’s greatest heroes. Along with the Godzilla and Gamera series of films, he helped popularize the “kaiju” genre, as well as the “tokusatsu” genre. Ultraman’s appeal is cross-cultural and trans-national, evidenced in the Ultraman Connection Livestreams as well as comics such as The Mystery of Ultraseven. The comic is not only designed for new readers but fans as well. Writers Higgins and Groom have promised the title will explore Ultraseven’s whereabouts since the television show’s conclusion; it will also connect back to the Ultra Q backup that appeared in Rise of Ultraman.

The Ultraman brand’s expansion into America continues with Marvel Comics’ The Mystery of Ultraseven, which will debut in summer 2022. The series will be a delight for Ultraman fans old and new.
