Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s What If…? season 1 finale.

After the heroes’ devastating loss at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Tony checked out of his role as a superhero and focused on living a quiet life with his wife, Pepper Potts, and daughter, Morgan. For five years, the genius billionaire spent time with his family, until the idea of the “time heist” came about thanks to Ant-Man. Understandably, he was skeptical to suit back up, but he couldn’t live with the idea that there’s a possibility of bringing Spider-Man back and he didn’t do anything about it. In the end, he joined the mission. While the surviving Avengers succeeded in reversing the decimation, the threat from 2014 Thanos forced Tony to sacrifice his own life by snapping the Mad Titan and his minions out of existence.

Robert Downey Jr. has actually talked about his MCU character’s final armor not being designed to protect him. While Mark LXXXV was significantly more advanced than any other suit he ever created, it wasn’t built to sustain the impact of the Infinity Stones’ powers. It’s worth remembering that Tony didn’t initially plan on rejoining the Avengers. He was happy with the life he had with his family, so chances are that Mark LXXXV just turned out to be the latest armor in his repertoire. Had he been given extra time to actually design and make a suit that could withstand the power of the elemental crystals, he may have been able to do so. Since Wakanda was in constant contact with the Avengers anyway, chances are that they’d be willing to supply him with the Vibranium that he would need.

While the What If…? finale suggested a way on how Iron Man could’ve survived his snap in Avengers: Endgame, the show also doubled-down on the fact that he is dead. As mentioned, the character has been killed in almost every episode he was featured in and many fans interpreted this as Marvel Studios’ way of saying that Tony Stark isn’t coming back to the MCU — at least not any time soon. It’s for the best, however, as walking back on the hero’s demise could cheapen what was otherwise a great send-off.
