Marvel Comics has reverted She-Hulk to her most classic form, as the hero transforms back to the look that the character made famous in the early-90s. Jennifer Walters had been sporting a more monstrous look during the bulk of Jason Aaron’s Avengers run. However, in Avengers #50, She-Hulk transforms with a look that will usher in a new era for the character.
She-Hulk has been a prominent member of the current Avengers team but has served more as a stand-in for her cousin, the Hulk, than being a fully-fleshed-out character in her own right. She-Hulk received a new look at the start of the current Avengers run, becoming Hulk-sized and more muscle-bound than ever before. While there’s nothing wrong with Marvel making She-Hulk embrace her rage and becoming a stronger – and literally bigger – hero, the new look was more about aligning her with the former Hulk than actually taking Jennifer in a bold new direction. Now, Marvel has reverted She-Hulk back to her old John Byrne-inspired look.
In Avengers #50 by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Javier Garron, Rafael Fonteriz, Ed McGuinness, Carlos Pacheco, David Curiel, Alex Sinclair, Matt Hollingsworth, Rachelle Rosenberg, David Baldeon, and Israel Silva, Marvel Comics concludes its World War She-Hulk storyline. She-Hulk ends up absorbing the Gamma Bomb the Red Widow tried to use to destroy Atlantis, saving thousands of lives in the process. However, in doing so, she absorbs 68 megatons of a Gamma Warhead, which runs through her body. With her pulsing Gamma Radiation, she enters a mysterious hideout inside Avengers Mountain and lets a powerful blast go, lighting the sky green. When She-Hulk re-emerges, she’s transformed into her more classic look.
Reverting She-Hulk to her classic look is a no-brainer, especially as Jennifer Walters will soon be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Keeping the hero big and bulky like Bruce Banner’s Hulk would have made her too similar to her cousin. Instead, Marvel is resetting the character and making sure she stands out as her new series launches next year.
She-Hulk’s transformation was extremely tidy given the World War She-Hulk arc was promised to be a must-read event. Instead, it ultimately fizzled out, quietly concluding in the Avengers #50 anthology. Still, seeing Jennifer Walters downsize and return to her old appearance is a welcome sight. Bulky She-Hulk didn’t work and she often had little to do during her time with the Avengers. Now, separate from the Avengers, She-Hulk can return to the courtroom and show readers what makes the character great again. Avengers #50 by Marvel Comics is in comic book stores now.
