Jamie Foxx is reprising his role as the supervillain Electro in Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, but this time he isn’t blue – a condition evidently promised by the studio. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third Spider-Man film set within the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Prior to the MCU’s incarnation of the titular web-slinging hero, Sony Pictures launched two separate Spider-Man franchises one after another, helmed by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb, respectively. Both Raimi and Webb’s films adapted many of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains to live-action, but were unfortunately relegated to non-canon after the MCU reboot. However, thanks to the introduction of the Marvel’s multiverse, characters from pre-MCU continuities like Electro now have a chance to reprise their roles once more.

Foxx first appeared as Electro in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. The largely maligned sequel to Marc Webb’s live-action Spider-Man reboot franchise introduced audiences to a version of the character that departed drastically from the original comic book source material. While comic book Electro typically wears a vivid green and yellow costume, Foxx’s version of the character had blue skin and only wore a gray jumpsuit. The prosthetics necessary to bring TASM2’s Electro to life deterred Foxx from wanting to reprise the role in the past. Fortunately, Marvel took the actor’s comfort into consideration when asking him to return for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Sony Pictures executive Amy Pascal revealed that the studios “promised [Foxx that] he wouldn’t be blue” for his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Promotional materials for the film confirm Electro’s new and more minimalistic appearance. Electro’s powers have also been re-colored to yellow to more accurately reflect the comic book source material.

Prosthetics and make-up can often be a point of contention for performers in genre films. Dave Bautista and Jennifer Lawrence are both famously outspoken about their disdain for the gruelling make-up process necessary for their respective roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men franchises. Evidently, the process behind Electro’s transformation was enough of a sticking point for Foxx that its exclusion in Spider-Man: No Way Home had to be stipulated in his final deal with the studios.

The MCU’s multiverse presents exciting new storytelling possibilities for the franchise. While it provides a convenient opportunity to revisit fan-favorite locales and characters, it will also be able to afford initially underdeveloped ideas a second wind. Foxx’s reprisal of the role of Electro gives Marvel Studios a chance to flesh out a character that was otherwise considered to be underwritten in his initial outing. Hopefully, Spider-Man: No Way Home will justify Electro’s return to the big screen with a more substantial and emotionally satisfying arc.
