Marvel makes history once again – their own history – as the Avengers first assembles 1,000,000 years in the past. A soft reboot, Marvel Legacy #1 puts fans in the way-back machine, introducing them to the oldest iteration of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It also sets up the shape of things to come in the Marvel Universe.

The future of the MU looks bleak right now, though, after Hydra Captain America tried to destroy decades of Marvel lore in Secret Empire. Fortunately, Generations will begin the process of rebuilding trust among Marvel’s finest. On its heels, Legacy brings the company’s latest initiative into focus. And, as is sometimes the case, before Marvel moves forward, it needs to step back – in this case, all the way to ancient history.

Marvel first teased their old timey Avengers in June and now have unveiled their team for the ages in all its glory. The team consists of Starbrand, Phoenix, Thor’s father Odin, Agamotto (one of the ancient Vishanti that aided Doctor Strange), the first Iron Fist and Black Panther, and Ghost Rider. The first issue of Legacy, written by Jason Aaron (Star Wars) and drawn by Esad Ribic (Secret Wars), will dig deeper into the mysteries of Marvel’s past, as well as the pressing concerns of its contemporary world. As Executive Editor Tom Brevoort describes the one-shot:

“Marvel Legacy #1 isn’t simply a history lesson. Rather, it’s the starting gun to a bevy of mysteries, secrets, and revelations that will reverberate across the Marvel Universe in the weeks and months to come! No character, no franchise will be untouched by the game-changing events that play out across its pages. Jason and Esad pulled out all the stops to fat-pack this colossal issue with as much intrigue, action, surprise, mystery, shock, and adventure as possible!”

In addition to taking its heroes back a million years, Legacy will also revisit elements of Planet Hulk; solve what happened to Captain America; reveal the reason for Jean Grey’s sudden outward bound experience to Canada; and dig into Thor’s battle in Asgard. Even more disturbing, Iron Man’s comatose, mechanical-supported body has disappeared. Worse still, someone or something is gathering up Infinity Stones. In light of these and other nagging mysteries, Legacy promises to answer the pressing questions of the Marvel Universe, starting with the monstrous, 50-page first issue on September 27.

While Marvel’s soft reboot will explore many aspects of the MU, digging up ancient history is actually the most novel of the company’s recent approaches. Stripping the team down to its roots should provide a new perspective on Marvel’s heroes, as well as what it means to be an Avenger. Prehistoric life also offers a fun break from the tech-savvy modern era and should emphasize human (and cosmic) cleverness of Marvel’s characters, in addition to Marvel’s more mystical elements.

Most of all, it finally sounds like the publisher has a unified direction for their future endeavors. Fewer restarts and revamps means a great deal less confusion for readers new and old. Legacy and its prehistoric heroes will hopefully offer fans relief from event book overload, regular character deaths, and reboot-itis. In addition, the ancient backstory should smooth the transition from Legacy #1 into Marvel’s main books.

In the meantime, Marvel is banking that a trip through time will keep fans coming back for every era. Here’s hoping the adventure and history is a breath of fresh air, rather than a musty peek at the comic house’s cave-dwelling concepts.

Marvel Legacy #1 arrives on September 27, 2017.
