Warning! Spoilers for The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 below

Marvel Comics just took a deeper look into the first meeting of the Illuminati, revealing Black Panther didn’t always trust Iron Man. In a brand new preview for The Death of Doctor Strange: The Avengers #1, the story flashes back to the formation of Marvel’s most secret superhero group. When Black Panther arrives on the scene, Tony Stark admits he represents everything his fellow hero distrusts.

Iron Man and Black Panther have been both friendly and foes in the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther joined team Iron Man alongside Vision, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and War-Machine, and fought for the Sokovian Accords after the death of his father T’Chaka. In the comics, Black Panther has often (understandably) wondered whether his fellow Avenger wants his precious Wakandan Vibranium metal for his own scientific and capitalistic use. In the preview for The Death of Doctor Strange: The Avengers #1, Iron Man straight-up admits that Black Panther doesn’t trust him because he’s protective of Vibranium.

In a brand new preview of The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 by Alex Paknadel, Ryan Bodenheim, Rachelle Rosenberg, Darren Shan, and Kat Gregorowicz by Marvel Comics, readers are taken to Wakanda ahead of the first meeting of the Illuminati. Iron Man and Doctor Strange have a somewhat tense conversation before the meeting as Tony Stark tells the Sorcerer Supreme he can’t trust him because he can never fully grasp his magic, saying, “I can’t trust what I don’t understand.”

However, Iron Man welcomes Doctor Strange into the Illuminati for one reason: Black Panther trusts him. But, Tony Stark admits that T’Challa doesn’t extend the same trust towards him. He tells Doctor Strange he embodies “everything King T’Challa mistrusts…”, adding that since his country sits on a vast deposit of Vibranium – the world’s most precious metal – he doesn’t trust the Iron hero around it. Iron Man admits that Black Panther’s lack of trust is earned.

Considering Iron Man’s shady past and his love of fame and fortune, Black Panther is right not to trust him fully. If Vibanium fell into the wrong hands, it could have deadly repercussions for the Marvel Universe. Now, imagine if that person has a genius-level intellect like Tony Stark. Ultimately, it’s unlikely Iron Man would ever use Vibranium for intentionally evil reasons, but it’s understandable why Black Panther wouldn’t want him anywhere near the powerful metal. Black Panther didn’t trust Iron Man for a completely valid reason. The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 is in comic book stores this Wednesday.
