Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s lack of availability over the last eight years has eventually led to a Twitter campaign to bring back the legendary fighting game. Originally released in 2000, MvC2 has only seen a handful of releases through its history. The title originated in arcades, then was ported to the Sega Dreamcast, Sony’s PlayStation 2, and the original Xbox through 2002 before coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009 as a digital-only title. The digital release of MvC2 allowed the game to see new life on newer hardware, as well as the ability to play online using a rollback infrastructure.
MvC2’s solid online play allowed the fighting game title to see activity in a modern format as players were able to not only purchase this fighting game classic, but they would also be able to play with their friends around the world. The addition of rollback netcode and accessibility on modern consoles allowed MvC2 to see a second life even as its sequel, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, released in 2011. Two years later, however, both Marvel vs. Capcom titles were removed from their digital storefronts with three days of notice.
The practice of removing titles from a digital storefront is not an uncommon one, especially as it pertains to specific licenses. Games such as Deadpool and X-Men Origins: Wolverine were also discontinued along with the first two Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games. However, several of these games would also see new releases on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC either in the form of a port or, in Deadpool’s case, a remaster. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 remains among the few games affected by the abrupt removal to not see a new release, and fans are now calling on Capcom to #FreeMVC2.
The Movement to #FreeMVC2
Digital Eclipse, a development studio known for its preservationist approach in releasing retro game compilations, had expressed an interest in pursuing new projects after being funded as a studio. Maximilian Dood, a Twitch variety streamer and fighting game content creator, detailing the various factors behind a potential campaign to revive MvC2 with Digital Eclipse taking the reins. In his video on YouTube, he goes on to state that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has been “unreleased, unavailable, and unpurchaseable” for the last seven years, and that he would like to see the game come out in a format that would allow players “to enjoy the game together in the modern day.”
Mike Mika, studio head of Digital Eclipse, responded positively to the message, posting on Twitter that they would “swap in GGPO and do documentary and museum work, etc. Will need to talk to Disney and Capcom to make it real. We’re game if they are.” Formerly known as Backbone Entertainment, Digital Eclipse was also responsible for the last release of the title on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Maximilian names Digital Eclipse as “one of the best teams” to bring MvC2 to modern consoles, citing their experience in working with Disney in procuring the licenses for the Disney Afternoon Collection as well as their experience on retro video game titles.
Maximilian goes on to call back to his previous Twitter campaign for Microsoft’s Killer Instinct by starting the campaign to #FreeMVC2, asking fans to “remind Digital Eclipse, Marvel, and Capcom how important Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is to the history of video games.” Digital Eclipse’s experience in working on the title’s previous release and its interest in revisiting the project with the archival work the company is known for today would be an enticing chance for fans to relive and revisit the retro fighting classic.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 And The Contributing Factors of #FreeMVC2
While Maximilian’s video serves as a call to the community, the seeds were inadvertently planted one year prior with Evo 2020. Prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Evo 2020 was going to host a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Tournament of Champions, celebrating 20 years of the fighting game’s existence. As COVID-19 began to affect the world at large, Evo made the shift to Evo Online, leaving the status of the MvC2 tournament as an uncertainty. The cancellation of Evo Online made the question a non-factor moving forward, but the acknowledgement of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as part of Evo’s original lineup for 2020 led to questions about the game’s future while highlighting its current unavailability.
Through its 20 year lifespan, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 appeared in 11 consecutive Evo events from 2000 to 2010, making it one of the longest tenured games in the event’s history – only to be replaced by its sequel in 2011 through 2017. Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s success at Evo allowed the franchise to maintain a spot at the world’s largest fighting game tournament for 18 straight years, solidifying the franchise as a mainstay within the fighting game community. The history of MvC2 at Evo is a factor that resonates greatly with its fans and players on the competitive side of the community, but even players beyond the scope of the FGC’s competitive scene have found reason to love Capcom’s crossover title.
The presence at Evo 2020 and the cancellation of Evo Online would not be the only mentions of the fabled crossover fighting game before the end of the year. In November, actor and producer Michael B. Jordan participated in Sony’s PS5 First Play campaign leading to the launch of the new console. In a since-deleted Instagram post made alongside the promotional campaign, he stated that players and fans need to “figure out how to bring back Marvel vs. Capcom 2!”, putting the arcade classic back in the spotlight during Sony’s promotional push for its latest console and showing the level of reach the legendary title has had over the years.
Marvel and Disney’s willingness to rerelease and remaster previously delisted titles is a sign that perhaps not all hope is lost. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 suffered a similar fate only to be brought to modern consoles and PC in late 2016 and early 2017. Growing interest from fans, players, celebrities, content creators, and even development studios shows that there may be a market for the return of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on a modern platform with new features to make what was old new again. Both Disney and Capcom have not responded to the campaign to #FreeMVC2, but fans continue to send an outpouring of support in the hopes of sparking a new age of heroes.
