The Marvel Universe has been hit with a horrifying zombie invasion before, but their upcoming challenge might be the greatest undead threat the heroes will ever face. Spinning out of the pages Marvel Zombies: Resurrection one-shot from 2019, Marvel’s heroes are set to try and figure out just how to stop zombies from overtaking the Earth.

In the original Marvel Zombies: Resurrection one-shot, the heroes investigating Galactus’ dead body floating in space. When they took a closer look, they discovered plenty of horrors from within. Galactus’ body was hollowed out and converted into a type of spacecraft, where something was living inside. It turns out, Galactus’ body was the host for zombie-like creates capable of turning heroes into cannibalistic monsters. Numerous heroes including Magik, Thor, and Johnny Storm were turned in the mission.

This week Marvel announced a miniseries continuing from the previously released one-shot, titled Marvel: Zombies Resurrection #1 by the same creative team of writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Leonard Kirk. The four-issue limited series will see Spider-Man team up with a group of heroes in an effort to take down and cure those who were infected as the battle comes to Earth. Kennedy described the series as a tense horror comic, where no hero is safe.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be writing MARVEL ZOMBIES: RESURRECTION, or to be working with the amazing Leonard Kirk again,” says Johnson. “The original MARVEL ZOMBIES made such an impact on fans when it came out, and now Marvel has been kind enough to let me do my own take on it. And although there’s a lot there for fans of the original, it’s a very different take. MARVEL ZOMBIES: RESURRECTION is an all-in horror series, with tension that doesn’t let up and a cast of characters who have become like family to each other, none of whom are safe.

So, for those wondering what happened following the events of the initial one-shot, Marvel Zombies: Resurrection will continue the hero’s unspeakably horrific journey as they return to Earth. With the body of Galactus and a slew of infected heroes (and creatures), following close behind, the battle will ultimately be deadly. What’s also interesting is whether the zombie creatures will somehow reanimated Galactus. In-Hyuk Lee’s cover for the series shows a turned Galactus chasing after Spider-Man. Whether the actual plot picks up on this thread remains to be seen. Regardless, it’s a really menacing cover showing the potential threat the heroes are up against.

The previous Marvel Zombies stories have all been entertaining, bloody affairs. It appears Marvel Zombies: Resurrection #1 will continue that trend. The Marvel Universe is going to be in big trouble.
