Following a rumor that circulated around the internet this weekend, Crystal Dynamics threw together a slapdash announcement today to confirm that Spider-Man will be coming to Marvel’s Avengers next year exclusively on Playstation.

Last week, UK retailer Base was discovered to have had a listing for Avengers that mentioned Spider-Man was a Playstation exclusive character. At the time, Base told IGN that the listing was incorrect, and had in fact been on their site for over a year: “The information was removed from our product page as it was not correct. We removed the information as soon as we found out that it was not correct. It had been on the product since E3 June 2019 (11 June 2019).”

Despite this, Crystal Dynamics has now confirmed that Spider-Man will, in fact, be exclusive to PS4 and PS5 players when he joins the game sometime in 2021.

The announcement, made in a blog post on the official PlayStation, explains that Spider-Man will join Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and the rest of the adventures in a special in-game event. Few other details are shared, other than the fact that there will be multiple skins and costumes available for the web-slinger.

It’s hard to believe that we’ll still be dealing with console-exclusive content for multi-platform games next generation, but here we are. Many players were hoping that perhaps a Marvel’s Spider-Man skin would be exclusive to PlayStation, which was also a PlayStation exclusive game. Instead, the most popular Marvel character will be locked out of the game for PC and Xbox players.

While not part of the announcement, this exclusivity also seems to confirm that Marvel’s Avengers will not have cross-play. While other developers have touted cross-play for their next-gen games, Crystal Dynamics hasn’t made mentioned any of the War Table livestreams, now we know why.

As Microsoft moves away from any and all console exclusives and embraces a more consumer-friendly “play anywhere” attitude about content, Sony has indicated they’ll be holding a firm grip on their console exclusives in the next generation and this reveal further proves it. It’s unfortunate, to say the least, and something we were certainly hoping they wouldn’t feel they needed to do to keep their lead over Microsoft. With Spider-Man: Miles Morales also being a PlayStation exclusive, Spider-Man fans only have one option for where to play next-gen.
