Marvel’s Avengers Out-Earned By NBA 2K21, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

Marvel’s Avengers loses its brief spot on the revenue totem pole, being out-earned by NBA 2K21 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 this past month.

Marvel’s Avengers, a high-budget live-service game that’s promised years of content before it ever released, fell short in revenues compared to sports games NBA 2K21 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 +2 this past September. While a new NBA 2K release is never easy to compete with, the superhero looter’s inability to contend with a skateboarding sim remake might spell disaster for its best-laid plans for milking its playerbase after launch.

Marvel’s Avengers, the superhero lovechild of Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics, started off with somewhat of a bang, topping sales charts at its release and pulling in sales figures that were only second to Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 in the franchise’s illustrious history, despite early controversy over the less-than-stellar character models and the news that Spider-Man was a PlayStation-exclusive DLC character. However, even though Marvel’s Avengers topped the charts in the UK in terms of physical sales and beat out its primary rivals NBA 2K21 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, it’s becoming clear as time goes on that the game’s initial success came from a well-coordinated marketing campaign and less from the game’s actual replayability.

In a new SuperData report, Marvel’s Avengers is revealed to have fallen behind the competition in terms of revenue this past month. While it pushed 2.2 million units, that’s still lower than expected for a game of its scale and budget, and it’s 2,000-player average concurrent player count is undoubtedly capping off its recurrent spending. Meanwhile, NBA 2K21 has topped September 2020 despite selling fewer copies (1.9 million digital units) than its nearest rivals. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, on the other hand, has risen up from its initial fourth place spot at launch to a respectable second, ostensibly because of these three major titles, it’s the only one that managed to unify nostalgia with solid gameplay and favorable critical response.

Banking on nostalgia paid off for game publishers in September. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 outsold previous Activision remakes and #SuperMario 3D All-Stars had the biggest launch ever for a Mario game on Switch. https://t.co/KHLoG9IWkj pic.twitter.com/eEKT27E1tp

Despite their own inherent flaws, it seems clear that the difference in this long-term performance (which, frankly, is a bit of an embarrassment on Square Enix’s part) is that Marvel’s Avengers better-performing competitors have more of actual going for their playerbases than the flashy Destiny does. In fairness, with its next-gen price of $70 for a game criticized for bringing next to nothing new to the table, it’s doubtful that NBA 2K21’s earning streak will last or extend upon its built-in fanbase. Meanwhile, because Activision Blizzard took the time to truly encapsulate the spirit of the original games and expand on them organically with lots for players to see and do, it’s no small wonder that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is the fastest-selling title in the series.

There’s little doubt that figurative alarm bells are going off at the Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics offices responsible for Marvel’s Avengers’ post-launch roadmap and countless hours being poured into the ultimately shallow experience. If the gaming industry has learned anything from the slow-motion disaster that was and is Anthem, the answer seems pretty clear that no amount of super strength will be able to dig Marvel’s Avengers out of the deep grave it dug for itself when it adopted and maintained a game plan all but destined to lead to failure.
