Marvels Avengers The Story Its Roster And Everything Else Weve Learned

The reveal of Marvel’s Avengers by Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics more than a year ago was greeted with a certain amount of hostility. Marvel movies have been clogging up Hollywood with back to back high-profile yet low quality moneymakers for the past half a decade or more, and the gaming community didn’t want this Marvel craze to infect the gaming industry as well. At the time of the announcement, it seemed like a bad halfway between a blatant cash grab imitation and a knock-off, fearing the same characters as the movies but with altered designs and personalities. Very little information about the gameplay itself was revealed, and gamers were left skeptical.

However, judging by the new information we’ve learned about Avengers, a lot of work has been done over the course of the past 12 months: design tweaks, gameplay optimization, and more. With the release date looming, the game’s developers dumped a whole load of information on us last month to hype it up, and honestly? It’s working.

Here is everything we’ve learned about Marvel’s Avengers, and why now is the time to get excited about it.

What Is It With Avengers And Waiting Five Years?

The first trailer for Marvel’s Avengers managed to muddy waters that hadn’t even existed before. Some people even thought the game was called Avengers: A-Day. That is not the case: A-Day is the name of the day celebrating the heroic squad on which the game begins. There’s a terrorist attack on that day that sends the Avengers into hiding and appears to kill Captain America.

Five years later, Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, goes about uncovering the conspiracy that wrongfully pinned the blame for the attack on the Avengers. She starts out trying to take down M.O.D.O.K., the game’s primary antagonist, and A.I.M., the corporation which now rules San Francisco where the attack took place, alone. However, her plans eventually lead her to the disbanded Avengers. She reveals what she knows about the conspiracy and convinces them to reunite and join her cause.

Avengers, Assemble! Or, Stick To Single Player.

Destiny players will be familiar with the set-up Square Enix appears to have adopted for Marvel’s Avengers. While the focus of the game will be its single-player campaign, there are also co-op missions called War Zones. It’s unclear whether players will have to take part in War Zones in order to progress through the game. What is clear, however, is that gamers who prefer to play alone can recruit AI Avengers rather than playing online during War Zones if they would rather play alone.

As for the characters available at launch, one has been mentioned already. Kamala Khan. She will be joined by Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Iron Man. Square Enix has revealed that more characters will be added as time goes on. The best news of all? The DLC will come at no extra cost.

Gameplay, Movesets, And Custom Costumes

Players who do choose to venture into battle with other players online might not even recognize the heroes they stand alongside. That’s because, from their move sets to their super suits, each Avenger will be entirely customizable. Each hero will have various upgrade paths when it comes to the moves they can perform. Different paths dictate what areas of combat are their strongest, and which are their weakest.

Costumes and outfits are where the real unique differences will come into play. Looks from throughout Marvel’s history will be included in the game. Some will be unlocked as players progress, while others will be purchasable via the in-game store. Square Enix has already assured fans that any outfits that cost money will be purely aesthetic, and will not make a difference to an Avenger’s ability to perform in battle.

Marvel’s Avengers will come to PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC on September 4, 2020. Anyone who buys a copy on PS4 or Xbox One will be eligible for a free upgrade when the game comes to PS5 and Xbox Series X once the next-gen consoles have been released. The next-gen versions of the game will come with two graphical modes for players to choose from.
