Warning! Spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #20 below

Witnessing Captain America and Miles Morales fighting Green Goblin side-by-side is a welcome sight for anyone that recalls that Spider-Man was prophesied to kill Steve Rogers during Civil War II. A lot has changed since the controversial event, proving superhero relationships are a complex thing.

During Marvel’s second Civil War event, lines were drawn between heroes that believed in using the visions of an Inhuman named Ulysses to prevent disasters before they occurred, and heroes that felt taking action based on these prophecies were irresponsible. Captain Marvel led the faction intending to depend on the future visions and Iron Man spearheaded the opposition. Pre-emptive actions inspired by Ulysses’ visions seemingly prevent several incidents but also resulted in the deaths of James Rhodes and Bruce Banner, War Machine, and the Hulk, respectively. During a massive battle in Civil War II #5, everyone present witnessed a vision of Miles Morales killing Captain America in Washington, D.C.

A version of Civil War II’s big twist did finally play out in Secret Empire #7, when a rage-filled Spider-Man nearly beat Captain America, remade by Hydra with a cosmic cube, to death after Cap killed Black Widow. Since those dark days, the true Captain America has been restored, and it appears he and Miles Morales have been able to move past those past traumas and unite for the common good. After arriving in Brooklyn to help free some of Spider-Man’s classmates from C.R.A.D.L.E. custody, Steve Rogers and Miles join forces to combat Green Goblin and an army of Goblinoids alongside several other allies in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #20, written by Saladin Ahmed and drawn by Marcelo Ferreira, Wayne Faucher, and David Curiel. Even as Spider-Man is among a group of teenage heroes being hunted by the government, Cap defers to him and allows him to lead the charge in battle. Yet another sign there is no bad blood or grudge held between either of them over past events.

Captain America has repeatedly been a champion for Miles. Even in the moments after the original prophecy, Steve stood up for Spider-Man when Captain Marvel attempted to arrest the young hero for a crime that had not yet occurred. While that was the Hydra-corrupted Cap with the goal of creating dissent amongst heroes, it still benefitted Spider-Man. Again, when the U.S. government banned teenage heroes in Outlawed after Kamala Khan was gravely injured as Ms. Marvel, Cap, acting of his own free will, refused to be a mouthpiece for those persecuting young vigilantes.

While the Marvel Universe is constantly subjected to major paradigm-shifting events that can shift focus away from previous ones, the past is never completely forgotten. Even Spider-Man’s origins in the now-defunct Ultimate Universe have come back to haunt him. Ultimatum, the original Miles Morales of Earth-616, is behind the Goblin attack as part of a plot to send Spider-Man back to the alternate reality he came from. Luckily, since joining the primary Marvel Universe, Miles Morales has become an integral part of the superhero community and has allies like the true, untainted Captain America willing to fight at his side.
