Marvels Eternals Marketing Spoiled Its Big Twist

Warning! Spoiler ahead for Eternals.

The big twist in Eternals was secretly spoiled by Marvel Studios’ marketing. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the latest MCU blockbuster introduces a new superhero team in the MCU known as the Eternals. Created by the Celestials, they were sent to Earth thousands of years ago to protect humanity from Deviants. But despite spending so much time together, they also get in various disagreements — some of them even had had serious repercussions.

After operating as a unit for several thousands of years, the Eternals decided to go their separate ways when the final Deviant had been killed. However, once a more evolved version of the monster creatures re-appear in the 21st century, the team needed to re-assemble to fight them. Eternals spent a considerable amount of time seeing the heroes reconnect with each other after a long time of separation. Along the way, they learned that Deviants weren’t really their main problem. Instead, it’s the looming Emergence that’s more dangerous. Apparently, Avengers: Endgame kickstarted the catastrophe. Due to their differing opinions regarding how to approach the matter, however, arguments broke out.

The core conflict took place early on but was revealed much later in the film. Apparently, the Eternals’ real mandate was to ensure that the Emergence takes place as the destruction of Earth would result in the birth of a new Celestial. Ikaris (Richard Madden), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) wanted to follow the directive from Arishem the Judge, fully believing that it’s for the best. Meanwhile, the rest of them were opposed to the idea; spending time with humans in the last 7000 years having made them realize that they are worth fighting for. Before all of this, however, Ikaris already had a disagreement with Ajak (Salma Hayek) which resulted in the former murdering her by letting the Deviants kill the Eternals leader. This particular twist was heartbreaking for the rest of the team when they learned about it, but it’s something that the film’s trailers already subtly revealed. Looking back at all the marketing footage for Eternals, Ajak wasn’t in any of the modern-day scenes except when she had her final discussion with Ikaris.

In the confines of the film itself, Eternals twist was kind of spoiled early on. When Sersi and Sprie found Ajak’s body at the ranch, it’s not difficult to figure out that Ikaris killed her. Re-examining the movie’s trailers, he was the last person she was seen with in the same setting. Couple that with a shot of the Ikaris shooting light beams from his eyes towards an unknown adversary, it’s fairly easy to deduce that he was the traitor all along. What’s interesting here is that Marvel Studios has become so good at crafting misleading and still entertaining marketing footage. They film scenes for promotional purposes and even alter shots to preserve the secrecy around their projects. So, why didn’t they put the same level of effort into hiding Eternals’ plot twist?

Aside from the unexpected death of Ajak, another big twist from Eternals was the revelation of the Celestials’ true nature. But, even this wasn’t executed as seamlessly as possible. MCU’s Phase 2 already depicted the cosmic beings are ruthless entities through the original Guardians of the Galaxy film. So, it wasn’t that surprising when their real plan was unveiled in the movie.
