The Deviants are the villains in Marvel’s Eternals, but which ones will appear in the 2020 movie? In Marvel Comics, the Deviants are a subterranean race of deformed, hideous creatures and the ancestral enemies of the Eternals. The Deviants have been the primary opponents of the Eternals since Jack Kirby’s 1976-1978 Eternals comic book series. With such a long history in the comics, there are several villains who may appear in the upcoming Phase 4 MCU film.

In Marvel Comics, the history of the Deviants, like the Eternals, goes back thousands of years. Cosmic beings known as the Celestials came to Earth and created two genetic offshoots of the human race. One was the Eternals, a species who would later evolve into god-like immortals who resemble their human cousins. The Deviants, on the other hand, lack the Eternals’ genetic superiority and longevity, and instead are monstrous in appearance. Forced into hiding by their looks, the Deviants tend to dwell in underground cities, since they, unlike the Eternals, are unable to blend in with human society.

The two races are set to make their MCU debut in the second Phase 4 film, Eternals, which is scheduled for a November 2020 release. The synopsis for the upcoming movie confirms that the film, which follows the events of Avengers: Endgame, will see the Eternals driven by a “an expected tragedy” to unite against “mankind’s most ancient enemy,” the Deviants. A large cast has already been announced for Eternals, but so far none of them are Deviants, which means the identities of the movie’s villains are still a secret. The following are five Deviants who are likely to appear in Marvel’s Eternals in some capacity.

Warlord Kro

As previously stated, Deviants don’t live forever, which is one reason why they’ve always been jealous of the Eternals. The Deviants have long hoped for a change in the evolutionary process, so that one day, they too can be genetically perfect. What they don’t know is that one of their own secretly is immortal. Warlord Kro is a scheming, red-skinned Deviant with an unusual genetic mutation that has allowed him to live for 20,000 years. Over the centuries, Kro has often been mistaken for the Devil, allowing him to effortlessly scare and manipulate humans for his own benefit.

Because of his longevity, Kro has been involved in a romance with Thena that has spanned several millennia. Kro has hidden this from the Deviants by tricking them into believing that Thena had affairs with many of Kro’s ancestors. Though Kro does genuinely love Thena, his ambitions to lead the Deviants have often put him at odds with the Eternals. Sometimes, Kro has taken their side, but there have been multiple incidents where Kro has attempted to defeat them. He’s even used his relationship with Thena to his favor, knowing that Thena will be merciful to him. In the past, this has led to a great deal of internal conflict within the Eternals, especially among Ikaris and Thena.

Of all the characters in Marvel Comics, Warlord Kro may be the strongest candidate to be the main villain in Eternals. His scandalous romance with Thena could end up being represented in the movie as well. As a notorious schemer and an occasional ally, Kro cold work as a character whose allegiance could shift at any point in the film.

Ghaur

One of the biggest concerns for the Deviants is evolution. That’s why Deviant priest-lords (who also act as advisers to the Deviant leaders) are entrusted with the important task of killing off the most horribly deformed Deviants. The purpose of this is to remove them from the gene pool and avoid further missteps in the evolutionary chain.

One such priest-lord is Ghaur, a character who wanted to control the Deviants from the shadows. His idea was to put someone on the throne who he could manipulate like a puppet, like Kro. Ghaur’s devious planning has at one time allowed him to control the body of a Celestial. Ghaur also served as the main villain in the 1989 crossover event, “Atlantis Attacks,” in which he battled the combined forces of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

Tutinax The Mountain Mover

Deviants don’t have the cosmic powers of the Eternals, so they’re unable to physically match the Eternals — with one big exception: Tutinax. As the strongest of all the Deviants, Tutinax the Mountain Mover has a fearsome reputation in the Marvel Universe for his immense size, strength, and destructive nature. Tutinax was imprisoned long ago, but was accidentally released by the Eternal, Druig. More muscle than brains, Tutinax wouldn’t work as the main antagonist, but could be utilized for a massive battle where the Eternals unite to take down a giant enemy created by CGI.

Karkas

Deviants in the comics are typically villains, but this doesn’t apply to every Deviant. Two in particular are actually heroes in Marvel Comics, one of which being Karkas. Karkas is an enormous, red creature whose appearance disgusted even his own kind. For this reason, Karkas was forced to spend his life in gladiator pits until he was liberated by Thena. After gaining his freedom, Karkas became an ally of the Eternals, and has also been involved in team-ups with heroes like Spider-Man, the Avengers, and Thor.

Karkas is the kind of character whose appearance is in stark contrast to his personality. Despite having the looks of a grotesque monster, Karkas possesses — as he claims in the comics — “the soul of a poet,” and is remarkably articulate in conversation. Karkas’ scholarly interests and philosophical outlook are part of what makes him one of the most unusual Deviants in Marvel Comics.

Ransak the Reject

Ransak received the name “The Reject” in his comic book debut in 1977’s Eternals #8, on account of his appearance. Ransak was hated by the Deviants because he looked identical to a human. For most of his life, Ransak was treated terribly by his fellow Deviants, causing him to become hateful and resentful of the people around him. As a result of the environment he was raised in, Ransak became a savage and ruthless warrior who quickly earned the title of “The Killing Machine.” He was later discovered and freed by Thena, who took pity on him and took him under her wing. Ransak always understood himself to be hideous, so he was confused — and a bit unnerved — when humans and Eternals treated him quite differently than his own people.

Ransak is the polar opposite of Karkas, which is why the two have developed a unique friendship. Whereas Karkas is a monstrous Deviant who behaves like an educated human, Ransak is considered to be attractive by human and Eternal standards, but acts more like an animal. While under the care of Thena, Ransak slowly learned to control his animal-like instincts and has become an ally of the Eternals. A character like Ransak the Reject (and his bromance with Karkas) would certainly be interesting to see adapted to the big screen for MCU’s Eternals.
