Warning! Spoilers for MODOK: Head Games #4

Marvel has no shortage of evil organizations, but AIM is undoubtedly one of the most villainous. However, while AIM has been a fixture of the Marvel Universe for many years, MODOK: Head Games just gave the nefarious group a brand new origin story.

Abbreviated from Advanced Idea Mechanics, AIM was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in 1966, debuting in Strange Tales #146. Originally, AIM was a branch of HYDRA created by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker during the Second World War, with the goal of developing technologically advanced weaponry to use agains the Allies. Although they were defeated in the war, both AIM and HYDRA persisted, eventually becoming entirely separate organizations due to growing ideological differences. Despite their separation, however, both HYDRA and AIM remained villainous and became enemies of Marvel’s Avengers. AIM would later be responsible for creating MODOK, who promptly seized control of the organization and remained as their leader for many years, but Marvel just revealed there is much more to the story.

MODOK: Head Games is a now-complete mini-series where the mechanical villain finds himself malfunctioning, seeing visions of a life he never had. Readers know these visions are actually glimpses into the world of Marvel’s MODOK Hulu series, created by Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum – the same creative team behind the comics. MODOK’s journey to uncover the source of these visions leads him deeper into his own past, until he comes face to face with his own father, Alvin Tarleton, who reveals he created both MODOK and AIM itself. Alvin forces MODOK to reboot his system as he explains his origin from the beginning – “I once looked out and saw a world imprisoned by religion and politics,” he says, “A world that demanded sovereignty through science. A world that needed AIM.”

Alvin goes on to say that he tried to give his son, George, a place in AIM, but he proved to be too simple-minded, so Alvin experimented on George to “improve” him, and thus MODOK was born. However, MODOK proved to be too powerful and usurped control of AIM, forcing Alvin into hiding. That much lines up with AIM’s original origin story, but Alvin being the founder of AIM is an entirely new development. It’s unclear if Alvin was in any way related to the leader of HYDRA or if Head Games is insinuating that AIM was always an independent organization, effectively retconning the HYDRA connection.

Even if this is a slight rewriting of Marvel history, there’s no confirmation that the events of Head Games will impact the mainstream Marvel universe. From the beginning, the series has played with the concept of alternate realities in referencing the Hulu show and even hinting that the MCU and comics universes are connected, so some discrepancies can be expected. However, it’s also possible that Alvin Tarleton really did have a role to play in establishing AIM, and perhaps that will be further explored down the line.
