Warning! This article contains spoilers for Daredevil #30

Marvel’s new Daredevil just cracked a new case with her apprentice involving the ancient gang of evil ninjas known as the Hand, and in doing so, just defeated a horror movie icon. The Hand have often given Daredevil comics a horror edge as they often bring their fallen soldiers back from the dead and invoking demons to do their bidding. In this latest issue, the undead ninjas turn up their horror-level by sending in one of their ghouls that bears a striking resemblance to Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th film franchise.

In Daredevil #30 by Chip Zdarsky with art by Marco Checchetto and Mike Hawthorne, Elektra Natchios AKA the new Daredevil is continuing her mission to clean up the streets of Hell’s Kitchen in a way that would make the prison-bound Matt Murdock proud. During her quest, she has picked up a new apprentice, a girl she saved during the King in Black’s invasion named Alice. The two vigilantes enter a club they suspect is the hub of a local drug ring, and that’s when a horror worthy of twelve movies begins.

The supposed son of Wilson Fisk, Butch, is currently in charge of the drug trade in Hell’s Kitchen for Izzy Libris, the current Kingpin of New York while Fisk focuses on being mayor. Daredevil and Alice enter the club to take Butch down and end his illegal operation in Hell’s Kitchen. Before the two can lay down their vigilante justice, Daredevil is attacked by a goon who looks exactly like the horror icon Jason, a blade wielding, hockey mask-wearing brute!

At the beginning of the fight, Elektra believes her attacker to be a regular human, as she has no reason to believe a local drug pusher and enforcer has any ties to the supernatural, but her assumption is quickly corrected. The skills of the would-be Jason give Daredevil a run for her money, as she nearly dies during the fight on multiple occasions. At first she thinks that the look-alike gains the upper hand because she refuses to deliver a fatal blow. This is thanks to the promise Elektra gave Matt to not kill anyone while taking over as Daredevil, though her new apprentice doesn’t seem to mind doing what is necessary to win.

Alice, after fighting off a goon of her own, grabs a gun and shoots the villain, but he doesn’t die so much as vanish into a green smoke. Elektra then realizes that she wasn’t fighting an over enthusiastic Friday the 13th fan but a member of the ancient organization and her arch enemies the Hand. While Marvel’s new Daredevil just defeated horror movie icon Jason Voorhees, a new mystery has now presented itself from the fallout, one that could mean the horror in Hell’s Kitchen is just beginning.
