A fan-made concept video imagines Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with a character-switching mechanic similar to the one in Grand Theft Auto V. Insomniac Games’ 2018 adventure Marvel’s Spider-Man reintroduced PlayStation fans to the world of the wisecracking web-head, while Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales continued the superhero saga in 2020. Insomniac then announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in September 2021, with the upcoming open-world game set to feature both costumed crusaders.
While a reveal trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been released, few details are actually known about Insomniac’s next web-swinging installment. Two prominent comic book villains, Kraven The Hunter and the iconic symbiote Venom, are set to challenge New York’s greatest defenders as major antagonists. Both Peter and Miles are also confirmed to star, with the two heroes receiving brand new powers and tools that could reinvigorate combat, stealth and traversal. Outside of this confirmed information, any other discussion about the arachnid-themed adventure boils down to mere rumor and speculation. Some alleged Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 leaks suggest that Spider-Man’s iconic black suit will play into the game, this time being specifically created by Oscorp, but these leaks are impossible to verify.
An impressive concept video, created by YouTuber ItIsSpid, incorporates Grand Theft Auto V’s character switching into Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Rockstar Games 2013 open-world crime game featured three protagonists, with players able to switch between them at any time regardless of their location on the map. ItIsSpid imagines a similar spectacular system where players can choose between Peter and Miles as they start the game. The menu displays the current story mission and indicates whether Peter or Miles can access it. Choosing to play as Miles allows the player to jump straight into an active crime, but afterwards the game prompts them to continue the story by switching to Peter. Doing so prompts Miles to text Peter about story events, and this leads to a seamless transition into controlling Peter. The concept video ends ominously, seeing as Peter tracks Venom into an alleyway but is apparently ambushed.
The announcement of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 led to cheers from Spidey fans, along with wild speculation about how the title will improve upon its predecessors. For example, many players want Peter and Miles to encounter each other in the Spider-Man 2 overworld, which could lead to some unexpected and memorable open-world moments. For example, a player swinging around as Miles could suddenly find Peter swinging beside them, which could initiate a conversation. The other Spider-Man could even lend a hand while fighting crime, particularly if the player is struggling against a large group of enemies.
With the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales, it’s no surprise that PlayStation gamers are excited for Insomniac Games’ next adventure. The title is said to be massive, leading to rampant speculation about what additions and improvements could be made on top of its predecessors. ItIsSpid’s character-switching concept is extremely impressive, with a very convincing user interface and a perfect idea for implementing character-specific story missions. While the Grand Theft Auto V-style character swapping is not confirmed, many fans would be happy to see ItIsSpid’s concept come to life in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
