Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will feature Venom and Kraven, and with Peter and Miles needing more help, it could arrive from an unlikely source: Sandman.

One of Spider-Man’s biggest characters that has yet to appear in Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series is the Sandman, and with many fans hoping to see him make an appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it would be interesting to see the studio portray him as a hero and not as a villain. Although the Sandman has traditionally been portrayed as a villain in Marvel Comics, particularly as a foe to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, the character has also spent quite a bit of time fighting alongside many of Marvel’s most famous heroes, even joining the Avengers for a brief period. With Sandman having appeared primarily as a villain in video games, most recently as a villain for the Avengers in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, it would be interesting to see Flint Marko’s alter-ego taking on a role as an ally to Spider-Man, rather than a foe.

First appearing in the Amazing Spider-Man #4 in 1963, the Sandman is one of Spider-Man’s most iconic foes. Born as William Baker, he grew up largely without a father, after his father, Floyd Baker, left him and his mother for a life of petty crime. Picked on a lot as a kid, William Baker had to learn to defend himself, eventually growing into a bully. He adopted a life of crime, but was eventually caught and went to prison, which is where he adopted the new name of Flint Marko. After escaping from prison, he came into contact with radioactive sand, giving him his powers as the Sandman. While the Sandman had a long tenure fighting Spider-Man as one of his toughest foes, he always remained – like many Spidey adversaries – a sympathetic one.

While the Sandman is not one of the featured villains in Marvel’s Spider-Man, he has been heavily requested by fans. His upcoming appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home has helped bring the character back into the forefront of fans’ minds, and many are wondering what Flint Marko might be up to in Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe. This leaves a perfect opening for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to introduce the character. Since many fans were first introduced to Sandman in Spider-Man 3, many are well-acquainted with the Sandman as a sympathetic villain (who eventually changes his ways), but it may be even more interesting for Insomniac to look to Flint Marko’s time as a reformed villain turned hero in Marvel Comics to inform his portrayal in the upcoming game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Should Make Sandman A Hero Again

The Sandman’s path to redemption began after he had a run-in with The Thing from the Fantastic Four (who could be receiving a game too) at a bar. He had a conversation with The Thing where he revealed that he had an interest in turning his life around and going straight. The Thing was initially hesitant to trust the Sandman, but the two eventually became friends after Ben was injured and Sandman visited him in the hospital. This led the Sandman to try to start a relatively normal life away from crime. He got a job working at a warehouse while renting out a room from a couple in Brooklyn. Eventually, the Sandman discovered that Kingpin and the Enforcers were running a protection racket that was harassing the couple. After tracking down the Enforcers’ hideout, the Sandman found that they had captured his old nemesis, Spider-Man. Showing that he truly wanted to reform, he rescued the web-head, and continued his heroic ways in other comics.

Eventually, the Sandman was offered to join a new chapter of the Avengers led by Captain America. This took many by surprise, but the Sandman ended up proving himself to be a powerful asset to the team, especially in the Subterranean Wars, during which time he also teamed up briefly with the West Coast Avengers to battle the Deviant, Brutus. After the war, Sandman continued to work with the Avengers to try to help those in need. Unfortunately, after a misunderstanding and dispute with Captain America, the Sandman left the Avengers and formed a group called the Wild Pack with Silver Sable. The group consisted of former mercenaries who were trying to turn their life around and do good. The Sandman worked alongside Silver Sable, who he also had romantic feelings for, before he eventually was lured back into a life of crime by the Sinister Six.

How Sandman Could Be The Hero In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

While Sandman is more likely to appear in Insomniac’s next Marvel game as a villain, his time as a hero could make for a more interesting story, especially considering that the trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 heavily teases Venom as one of the game’s main villains. In Marvel Comics, the Sandman was famously killed for a time by Venom, after a single bite from the symbiote destabilized his body. This sets up a rivalry between Venom and the Sandman that could feature heavily in the story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. If the game takes this into account, having had the Sandman suffer this fate from Venom’s bite before finding a way to rebuild himself, it could give him the motivation he needs to team up with Peter Parker and take on the symbiote.

The game could also be an opportunity to spotlight Sandman’s history as both a hero and a villain. Since many fans are likely looking forward to a boss fight with Sandman, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could open with Sandman battling Peter Parker, only to return later in the game to save him, mirroring his arc from the comics. While on Spider-Man’s side, he could assist Peter and Miles in certain sequences and boss fights throughout the game. Sandman could use his ability to reform his body to assist Spider-Man, adding a new dynamic to web-slinging. He could also team up with the web-slinger to fight bosses and takedown villains that might give Spider-Man trouble. For instance, he could help Peter and Miles in a potential battle against Hydro-Man, where the two could eventually combine to create Mud-Thing, mirroring one of the iconic Marvel Comics stories from Sandman’s time as a reformed villain.

There’s still no official word on what villains might appear in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or whether the Sandman will be among them. However, considering the character’s popularity amongst Spider-Man fans, it seems like only a matter of time before he makes his way into the Insomniac Marvel universe. If Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ends up serving as his introductory appearance, it should find a way to spotlight both his time as a villain and as a hero, giving Spider-Man fans the complicated and relatable character they’ve grown attached to in the comics.
