Mass Effect Why Liara Looks So Much Older Now

The biggest surprise of The Game Awards ended up being the first trailer for the upcoming Mass Effect title that was announced just over a month ago. It’s pretty surprising to see a trailer this soon and it’s hard not to get excited about it, in spite of the ongoing problems at BioWare.

There are a few indications of the passing of time within the new Mass Effect trailer. As the camera pans through space, we see the remnants of a Mass Relay, a clear result of the outcome of Mass Effect 3. There’s an interesting implication here for how that relates to the player’s choice at the end of Mass Effect 3, but that’s a story for another time. If the Mass Relays are gone, it would presumably take quite some time for people to develop Reaper technology to the point where they can travel long distances through space. And, conveniently enough, Liara has access to the resources necessary to do this given the fact that she’s the Shadow Broker.

The evidence of Liara’s age is pretty evident in the new Mass Effect trailer as well. When her hood blows back and she smiles upon picking up a piece of what can only be Commander Shepard’s armor, wrinkles become visible behind her eyes and on her cheeks, a clear sign of older age. Players already know that Asari can live to be over 1000 years old and that Liara was just over 100 years old in the original Mass Effect trilogy, so it’s safe to presume that quite some time has passed since the ending of Mass Effect 3. It might not be unreasonable to think that as much as a few hundred years have passed at of the time of this trailer.

Mass Effect is Going Back to the Milky Way Galaxy

It’s been a tumultuous stretch for Mass Effect since the controversial ending of the original trilogy. Mass Effect Andromeda was born out of a great idea to give the series an easy reboot after the defeat of the Reapers, but the game ended up being a complete disaster for the studio. Not only had players lost faith in BioWare as a developer, but the series turned into a laughing stock and Electronic Arts put it on ice for the foreseeable future. There’s been a glimmer of hope with the upcoming release of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and it now appears the series is going all the way back to the Milky Way galaxy.

This trailer is incredibly exciting for fans of the series given the apparent return of what made Mass Effect so beloved, but it’s also important to temper expectations right now. With the recent departure of Casey Hudson from BioWare and this game being so early in development, it’s going to be some time before this game comes out and there’s no way to know its current condition. Mass Effect is getting the second chance that it deserves, and it’s of the utmost important that the game takes as much time as possible to ensure it’s done properly.
