Xbox just released its highly-anticipated July Games Showcase, opening up with a Halo Infinite cinematic and demo. The formula of the classic series is all there as familiar enemies, weapons, vehicles, and environments abound throughout. As it turns out, however, Master Chief looks like he’ll be able to use Pathfinder’s grapple ability in Halo Infinite.

Anyone who’s played Apex Legends over the last year and a half is likely well-acquainted with a lovable “murder-robot” named Pathfinder. The playable legend is know for its ability to set team ziplines and scan beacons on the map. However, Pathfinder’s most iconic ability is its tactical grapple, which allows players to swing, vault, and pull enemies towards them. 343 Industries appears to have taken a liking towards this mechanic, as Master Chief showcased his own version in Halo Infinite’s gameplay reveal.

Just like Pathfinder, it looks like Chief will be able to shoot a grappling hook from his arm. We don’t see our hero use it to vault around in the demo, but we do see him use it to snag a nearby item. That means that the new mechanic may not allow for wacky movement like Pathfinder’s, but it could be key for sneaky item grabs. Speaking of snatching things, Master Chief does compare to Pathfinder in that he can also use the tool to pull enemies in for a swift punch to the face.

The rest of the game’s reveal showcase looked solid. Graphics seem average, aside from some beautiful backdrops and flappy birds. We’re also getting at least one new gun – the VK78 Commando Tactical Rifle (Kinetic class). Master Chief shows off its power via slow, automatic firing. He also picks up new equipment, namely a Drop Shield, which allows its user to shoot through the transparent barrier while enemies struggle to penetrate it from the outside.

At the end of the day, what will make or break Halo Infinite is whether or not it can strike the perfect balance between engaging new mechanics and iconic Halo elements of old. When tasteful, fresh innovation meets a beloved formula – there’s potential for magic to happen. Master Chief with a Pathfinder grapple may be cool and all, but hopefully 343 is still saving the best for last.
