The Matrix Resurrections star Jonathan Groff opens up about performing fight scenes with Keanu Reeves, and how he slammed Reeves’ head into a wall. Groff stars in the upcoming sequel alongside Matrix veterans Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, as well as Jessica Henwick, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Neil Patrick Harris. Directed and written by Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Resurrections premieres in cinema and on HBO Max on December 22.

In The Matrix Resurrections, Groff plays a mysterious new incarnation of Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith. Though the program-turned-virus was seemingly destroyed by the machines after being exposed once he assimilated Neo (Reeves) in The Matrix Revolutions, Smith seems to have survived into the rebooted digital world of the Matrix, though much like the new machine/human conflict featured in The Matrix Resurrections, his intentions are still shrouded in mystery. Groff’s character’s identity has seemingly been confirmed by character images, while trailers teased a fight between him and Neo, and now the star has opened up about facing off with The Matrix legend.

Speaking to EW, Groff discussed filming intense fight scenes with Reeves. Groff recalled that when filming a scene that would have seen Smith smash Neo’s head into a wall, Wachowski suggested Groff should instead place his finger below Reeves’ eyeball when striking to improve the action for the camera, with Reeves approving of the change. Groff then praised the working environment on the scene, discussing the trust involved in creating the sequence and the respect shared between everyone during filming. “Lana’s like, ‘If you could do an open palm and put your finger right underneath Keanu’s eyeball and then smash his face into the wall, that would be great for camera. I look at Keanu and he just gave me the nod, like, ‘Go for it.’ And the trust! I mean, I have to spin in a circle, slap my hand on his face, and then smash it into the thing. I feel like there’s so much love and respect that is swapped in those moments.”

Groff’s involvement was revealed in December 2019, though at the time of casting his character was still unknown to audiences. The star first featured in numerous teaser images, including one that called back to Smith’s interrogation scene in The Matrix where Groff’s mouth is sealed shut. The first trailer offered brief glimpses of Groff in action, focusing on instead showcasing him in his simulated San Francisco skyrise office. The second trailer offered more shots of Groff in action, while also intercutting footage of him with archive footage of Weaving’s Smith.

With Groff playing Smith in some new form, it’s clear that his scenes with Reeves would be intense as the two arch-enemies trade blows once more in The Matrix Resurrections. Despite this, it is incredibly welcome to hear that there was clear trust between the stars and director on set during the physically intense sequence. Even though Groff is a newcomer to the franchise, both Wachowski and Reeves carefully worked with him to bring one of cinema’s greatest rivalries back to the big screen in the most effective way.
