A brand new clip from The Matrix Resurrections reveals how Neo is related to the film’s new character Bugs. This latest film in the Matrix franchise, which is the first since the trilogy ended with The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, is directed by Lana Wachowski, directing a Matrix solo for the first time, since her sister Lilly opted out of the project. The film, which is being released in theaters and simultaneously on HBO Max on December 22, 2021, will bring back classic Matrix performers including Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, and Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian.

The new cast added to the project includes Christina Ricci, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus, and Jonathan Groff as Agent Smith. Not much is currently known about any of the characters, though their names give us some clues. Harris’s character The Analyst is likely a computer program, because those characters tend to receive official titles, whereas the human rebels who fight back against the Matrix are known by one-word nicknames, like Bugs. Bugs is played by Jessica Henwick, who has previously appeared on Game of Thrones, Iron Fist, and the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

IGN just shared a brand new clip from The Matrix Resurrections that reveals a great deal about both Neo and Jessica Henwick’s new character Bugs. Bugs is the character who has been seen in previous Matrix trailers showing Neo a white rabbit tattoo and leading him through a mysterious doorway, but now the full scene has been released. It features Bugs explaining how seeing Neo step off a roof without falling was their inspiration to learn more about the Matrix. Check out the video below:

This clip is doubly intriguing given how The Matrix Resurrections is setting up a new continuity for the character of Neo, who seemed to die at the end of The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. The moment that Bugs is describing is not a scene from any of the previous films, so the Neo of Resurrections has a history that Matrix fans are not yet aware of. Whether he is a new reboot of The One, as implied by the ending of The Matrix Reloaded, or just a new consciousness of the same Neo fans have come to know remains a mystery.

The Matrix Resurrections is one of the most hotly debated franchise films of the year. The original Matrix trilogy is a lightning rod of philosophical discussion and divisive opinions (especially on the relative quality of Reloaded and Revolutions), so it will be fascinating to see how Resurrections fits in with its progenitors. Given the spotty box office profits of previous HBO Max simultaneous releases, Matrix could either soar like Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune or crash and burn like The Suicide Squad.
