Nick Fury is one of the longest-lasting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having been introduced at the end of the first movie in the series. Most of his characterization is still confusing, though, as Fury’s appeared at infrequent times, with little explanation given as to how he got there or where he was before.

It’s expected that he’ll be fully understood as a character when he leads the Secret Invasion Disney+ series, but there are several things about him that currently don’t make sense. These have to do with both his traits and mannerisms to the decisions he made that don’t add up when they’re looked at logically.

9 His Logic Behind Not Calling In Captain Marvel Sooner

This should easily go down as one of Nick Fury’s worst decisions in the MCU, seeing as his failure to call Captain Marvel allowed Thanos to complete the Snap. It didn’t make sense why he held out on contacting her in the first place as he had no reason to.

Fury could have easily called Captain Marvel back during the Battle of New York against Loki or against, seeing as they were times where the Earth was being invaded or close to being destroyed altogether. Considering Fury’s deal was to contact Captain Marvel only when it was imperative, it’s a wonder why he didn’t follow through when the extinction of the human race was in question.

8 Not Realizing S.H.I.E.L.D. Had Been Infiltrated All Along

MCU 9 Things About Nick Fury That Make No Sense

It was only after he found out about Project Insight that Fury became suspicious of a breach in S.H.I.E.L.D., which was about several decades too late. As it was, HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. with its spies before Fury was even born, meaning he would have been amongst HYDRA agents the whole time.

However, Fury somehow never suspected that the colleagues and supposed allies he was around were his enemies. It’s hard to believe that he was employed by S.H.I.E.L.D. since the 1980s and didn’t realize things were off, especially since he had the highest level of clearance.

7 Staying Away For Years But Not Achieving Anything In His Secrets Missions

At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury decided to continue faking his death in order to make his enemies believe he was gone permanently. His mission here was to expose hidden HYDRA agents so he could bring the faction down permanently, but this was achieved without his help.

As seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was the Avengers who took HYDRA down while Fury was still out there. Apart from a couple of appearances to aid Phil Coulson, Fury’s absence didn’t amount to anything, making it illogical for him to even be away when it made no difference.

6 Not Giving The E.D.I.T.H. Glasses To Peter Park Straight After Tony Stark’s Demise

MCU 9 Things About Nick Fury That Make No Sense

Fury was given the E.D.I.T.H. glasses by Tony Stark to bequeath to Peter Parker in the event of Tony’s death. Fury was seen attending Tony’s funeral where Peter was also present, yet, somehow, he decided against giving the latter the glasses.

Instead, they were handed to Peter eight months later by Talos (who was impersonating Fury), and Talos only did so when he needed Spider-Man’s help to fight the Elementals. Since Fury had no idea what conflict would show up in the future, it doesn’t make sense why he couldn’t have simply presented the glasses to Peter during the funeral or shortly after it.

5 The Lack Of Clarity On Who He Planned On Including In The Avengers

Fury talked a big game about the Avengers Initiative, which he seemingly worked on since 1995. However, his plan doesn’t make sense when fully taken into consideration. After all, Fury turned down Iron Man as a member, didn’t invite Thor, only used Bruce Banner as a consultant, and didn’t officially mention Hawkeye and Black Widow as would-be members.

Overall, it was only Captain America whom Fury confirmed to want as a member of the faction, meaning he didn’t have any other people to include in the Avengers. Everyone ended up joining due to Loki’s invasion forcing them together, other than which it’s up in the air what Fury had in mind or who he wanted to include in the team.

4 Hiring Tony Stark As A Consultant Despite Knowing Tony Wouldn’t Follow His Orders

Despite acknowledging that there were some things in the MCU that Iron Man was right about, Fury rejected Tony Stark’s entry into the Avengers. Instead, he just wanted the Iron Man suit and Tony only as a consultant, claiming Tony never followed orders.

Yet, Fury was baffled when Tony butted heads with him and hacked into S.H.I.E.L.D.’s records. He had already surmised that Tony was insubordinate but had made the decision to hire Tony as a consultant anyway. Fury knew that Tony would never fall in line under orders, making his annoyance unwarranted since the arrangement was Fury’s decision, to begin with.

3 Expediting The Avengers Initiative Only After Learning Of Thor

Although it seemed as if Fury’s grand plan was initiated by The Avengers, the truth is that he didn’t make much of an effort beforehand. This doesn’t align with the urgency he showed in this area during Captain Marvel when he found out about extraterrestrial threats.

Considering The Avengers took place in 2012, it was 17 years after he came up with the Avengers Initiative that Fury went on with the plan. Moreover, he only expedited this after learning of Thor in 2011. This leaves a gaping hole of over a decade as to what Fury was doing and why he wasted all that time despite the Avengers Initiative being so important to him.

2 His Unknown Reason Not To Tell The Avengers About Coulson’s Survival

MCU 9 Things About Nick Fury That Make No Sense

Fury used the death of Phil Coulson as a means to motivate the Avengers into banding together and fighting Loki. That worked well at the time, but the team never learned that Coulson had actually survived and that Fury was aware of this.

Seeing as it was they felt guilty of Coulson’s death, the Avengers deserved to know the truth and there was no reason for Fury to withhold this information either. And yet, he didn’t reveal Coulson’s status even after S.H.I.E.L.D. had ended and when their enemies were finished.

1 His Knack For Appearing Unannounced Where He Shouldn’t Be

Part of his charm is the mysterious aura around him, and most of Nick Fury’s best scenes in the MCU are when he takes others by surprise. Still, it doesn’t make sense how he can appear seemingly out of thin air when it shouldn’t be possible.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fury somehow showed at Hawkeye’s homestead despite no one informing him of the team’s whereabouts and the Avengers actively hiding from the world at the time. Fury also seemed to know where Tony was in the Iron Man movies when nobody else could find him, while he somehow disappeared for years after the Ultron incident despite lacking the resources to do so.
