Morality in the Metal Gear universe isn’t always black and white. Big Boss is the epitome of this notion, since during the series he has both saved and ruined plenty of innocent lives.

The character’s morality is so all over the place that many fans debate if Big Boss should be considered a hero or a villain. This list can help with that discussion as it includes both the Legendary Soldier’s worst and most heroic deeds.

(To clarify, the list only focuses on the original Big Boss, aka Naked Snake, not Venom Snake, who shares the mantle.)

10 Worst: Manufactured Multiple Metal Gears

Most Metal Gears are dangerous bipedal machines that are capable of huge amounts of destruction. That didn’t stop Big Boss from having several of them manufactured, including Metal Gear ZEKE, TX-55 Metal Gear, and Metal Gear D.

ZEKE fell into the wrong hands shortly after it was built and it nearly fired a nuclear strike at the East Coast of the United States, whereas Metal Gear D was used by Gray Fox in an attempt to kill Solid Snake. Big Boss might’ve built some of them as nuclear deterrents, but they often did more harm than good.

9 Heroic: Saved Kaz From Mother Base’s Destruction

MSF’s base of operations (dubbed Mother Base) went down when a UN inspection ended up being a ruse set up by XOF to spring a surprise attack. The assault occurred while Big Boss was on his way back from a mission. His partner Kaz Miller, however, was at the base, fiercely trying to defend it.

Snake arrived in the middle of the conflict and dragged an injured Miller onto a chopper to protect him. Without the assist, Kaz would’ve likely perished.

8 Worst: Tried To Kill An Unarmed Solid Snake

After Solid Snake thwarted Big Boss’s plans on Zanzibar, the two went toe to toe. However, it wasn’t a fair fight as Solid didn’t have a weapon. That didn’t stop Big Boss from trying to gun down his (sort of) son.

It was a dishonorable act from someone who used to be seen as a hero. At least he paid for it as the younger Snake managed to turn the tables on his former CO by using a makeshift flamethrower and defeating him.

7 Heroic: Lost An Eye To Save EVA

When the future Big Boss was being tortured in MGS3, Volgin was trying to figure out who had been helping the operative. The Colonel was suspicious of The Boss, but Ocelot thought that Tatyana (aka EVA) was the traitor.

So, Ocelot played his version of Russian roulette with her, where he juggles his guns in the air and fires them at various points. When he was about to fire the bullet, Snake, who was hanging from the ceiling, swung his body into Ocelot, and the gun went off in the hero’s face instead.

6 Worst: Allowed A Medic To Be Big Boss

While it might not have been his plan, Big Boss went along with turning a medic into the new Big Boss, and used his replacement as a decoy so he could begin creating Outer Heaven.

The Phantom didn’t get a choice in the matter, and he lost whatever life and identity he had before becoming the new Snake. Plus, Ocelot pointed out at the time that the whole world wanted Big Boss dead, something that unfairly became the medic’s problem.

5 Heroic: Stopped Peace Walker

As an A.I.-controlled walking tank that only fired nukes in self-defense, Peace Walker was supposed to be the ultimate nuclear deterrent. However, it was once supplied with false data, which meant it was going to launch what the A.I. thought was a retaliatory nuclear strike on Cuba.

It also transmitted false data to NORAD and the Pentagon, who thought the Soviet Union was firing nukes, and they were going to retaliate. Big Boss, though, did enough damage to Peace Walker to make it unable to launch a strike. Then the tank walked itself into a lake to stop its transmission of the false data.

4 Worst: Tried To Create Perpetual War

During what was mostly a time of peace in 1999, Zanzibar Land raided nuclear weapon disposal sites to become the only remaining nuclear power, and proceeded to invade their neighboring countries.

Their leader at the time was Big Boss, who wanted to keep the world in endless war so there would always be a purpose for soldiers like him. Solid Snake managed to stop his father and saved countless lives in the process, but some of the damage had already been done.

3 Heroic: Destroyed The Shagohod

The Shagohod was a tank that was capable of launching nuclear missiles. The prototype was owned by Volgin, who wanted to mass-produce them and deploy them in Eastern countries.

Luckily for the world, Snake destroyed the facility where the information on the tank was stored. Then, with the help of EVA, he put an end to the only Shagohod in existence, eliminating Volgin in the process. These actions made mass production of the war machine impossible.

2 Worst: Groomed Children To Be Soldiers

During his plot to create perpetual conflict, Big Boss picked up war orphans and welcomed them into his organization. He didn’t seem to force them to fight as children, yet he still raised them to be soldiers and join his army.

They didn’t get any chance to choose the life they wanted. Big Boss forced them into a life of endless battle in the world of never-ending war that he wanted to create.

1 Heroic: Stopped A Potential War By Killing The Boss

After The Boss’s faux alliance with the GRU led to Volgin destroying a Russian research facility, the US had to prove that they had nothing to do with it. The Boss had to die by American hands, and Snake was the one to do it.

The Boss was Snake’s long-time mentor, so it wasn’t easy for him to kill her. But if he hadn’t done it, there would’ve been a huge war between the US and the Soviet Union.
