Konami says Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are being removed from digital storefronts temporarily over licensing issues. Metal Gear Solid 2 was originally released in 2001 and MGS 3 came out three years later, and they’re both regarded as classic PlayStation 2 games. They’ve been been re-released, expanded, and remastered for several other platforms over the years, and there’s even an ongoing rumor about Metal Gear Solid 3 being remade.

There are several ways to play the older Metal Gear Solid games without needing to own a PS2. Some of the series is available on PC, but many titles can also be played on newer consoles. Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection initially released for PlayStation 3 and featured every mainline Metal Gear game directed by Hideo Kojima, from the original Metal Gear to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. These are currently playable on PS5 through Sony’s PlayStation Now streaming service, while the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is accessible on the Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility.

On publisher Konami’s official website, it announced the temporary removal of both Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, as well as collections that include the pair of games, from certain digital storefronts globally starting November 8. This includes several releases and editions of both games, including those available on PS3, PS Vita, PS Now, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, and the Nvidia Shield. According to Konami, the removal of the Metal Gear Solid duo is because licenses for historical archive footage used in the games need to be renewed.

Konami did not state when licenses might be renewed, so it’s unclear when the games could return back to digital storefronts. There’s a possibility the games could end up being repackaged and re-released without the historical footage in the event that Konami is unable to renew the licenses. With how long it’s been since the two games have been released, Konami may find it to be in its best interests could opt for the latter, which could also be an opportunity to properly port MGS2 and MGS3 games to PC and newer consoles in a new collection.

While a brand-new game in the series doesn’t seem likely anytime soon after the departure of Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima from Konami years ago, remasters or remakes of games he directed for PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X/S are possible if the publisher is interested. It’s unlikely this latest news will somehow lead to that, but hope for modern releases of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 still remains.
